MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wiper mechanism removal

Hi All,

Having stripped almost everything from my midget 1500, I now need to remove the wipers. All is well except for the fact that, when the covers are off the joint where the flexible rack meets the little pinion wheel, I expected the wheel to gently prise off so I could release the flexible rack and slide the whole thing out of the hole in the centre bulkhead bracket. But the pinion wheel seems either a) stuck because it's old or b)made not to prise off.

If anyone has removed the assembly without damage, can you let me know how you did it? I don't want to use too much force in case something breaks. The alternative is to cut through the centre bracket and replace with a little removable cover-plate - easy enough but it would be good to know the right technique.

thanks guys,

Nick

Not quite sure of what you mean exactly, but normally the flexible "rack" is withdrawn in one piece from it's holding tubes and the pinion wheels rotate as it is withdrawn, leaving them and their housings attached to the car.

Re-assembly is the reverse, you just feed the rack back into the open tube end and help the pinions to turn as the rack reaches them.
Can be a messy task if the rack has grease on it.

Apologies if you were asking about something else to do with the wipers.

Nick,
are you talking about the wheel boxes that connect to and drive wiper arms?

perhaps if you put up a photo

if you remove the flexirack from the wiper motor then note or photograph the position of the gear arm or when you reassemble you could have the wipers wiping the bonnet and/or parking the wrong way, I know

Nick,

As JB A noted to remove the wheelboxes, (having removed the wiper arms !) pull out the flexible rack that passes through the wheelboxes from under the bonnet.

The rack wheels are not removable from the shafts if thats what you were trying to do.

If you are stripping out the outer tubes and wheel boxes I would take a picture of how the tubes are routed for reassembly.

Not sure what Nigel means about parking etc. Normal procedure for reassembly is to fit wheelboxes/tubes rack/ motor etc, wire up and run without wiper arms - let them self park and then fit the arms.

JB and Richard,

many thanks, that's answered my question admirably. :-)

cheers!

sorry I had to rush my previous post

I was mixed up about the parking position this was when I changed the gear and arm in the motor and on the new one the stop slope underneath was fitted to the opposite side of the gear wheel and I didn't notice

my caution was for if Nick remove the flexirack from the wiper motor to note the position of the gear lever arm within the motor
