MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wire wheel adapter for Mazda Rear end
I wasn't sure which category to post this under, but since this is where I used to lurk around in all those year ago, I'm going to post this info here so it can end up with my other posts in the Archives. I think some of the MGB guys might find this interesting as well. I purchased the rear wire wheel adapters for a TR250 from Victoria British. Moss Motors, USA also sells these adapters, but for quiet a bit more. part# 15-486 LH $50 Splined Hub adapter 15-487 RH $50 The bolt pattern for these adapters is 4 x 4.5. Exactly the same 4 x 144.3mm for the GSLSE rear end from a 1st generation RX7. My 13x4 wire wheels clear the calipers by about 2-3mm. These vented disks are enormous within the wire wheel rim, but they do fit. The GSLSE model RX7 came with 14" wheels. With the adapter inserted into the wire wheel hub, I measures a positive offset of 1/4 inch. The Mazda wheel studs are also a perfect fit. I had to debur the holes on one adapter, but the other fit immediately. 5mm wheel spacers can be purchased from Mazdatrix for $32. The GSLSE rear end was only available from 84-85 and are highly sought after. It comes with a clutch type Limited Slip differential(LSP), and is stronger than the axles of GS(drum) and GSL models. GSL rear ends are more plentiful than -SE and also have LSP, but with solid rotors, and lighter weight, but come only with 4x100mm bolt patterns. However, since you're having the axles machined anyways, the bolt pattern can be changed. Both rear ends use a cable type parking brake. My local pick-a-part always has a few GSL rear ends for $100 ea. Moser Engineering will cut down the axle housing and respline the axles for you. Their price list is on line. $125 respline pair of axles. Narrow housing $145. Brian Kraus "RX-midget" sent his axles there. http://www.moserengineering.com/moser/shop-services/ I'm not suggesting that everyone rush out to convert their cars. What someone chooses to do with this information is up to them. It took me a while to get to this point in my research. I hope that this information will be helpful to someone down the road. My car is a '65 Midget, square wheel arches, soon to have a triangulated four link, coil over rear syspension and a tubbed out rear to accomodate 245/50-15 on 15x7 Panasport wheels. I don't want flares and wish to keep as much of the outer appearance the same. My car will have between 150-275hp depending on the rotary engine build. Yes, I'm pumping up everything about this car while keeping the exterior appearance plain. My engine/trans/rearend cost me $200 total, before improvement. My hopes were to be able to slip out of the race rubber and back into the wire wheels for around the street. With this axle, adapters and wheels of a proper offset, I'll be able to do it all and have my cake too. Attached (hopefully) is proof of the adapter fitting a GSLSE hub. |
