MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Wire wheel hubs

I need to replace the front discs on the road midget (which has wire wheels)

Never had any dealings with wire wheel hubs before - does anyone have any tips on how to undo the hub/disc bolts - It doesn't appear that I can get a socket on them because of the bulge of the inner wheel taper.

Is the answer just to use a open ended spanner and hope it doesn't round off the bolts or is there a better solution that I haven't thought of...?

I had the same problem:

The solution will cost you one replacement socket (cut one down - save it in the drawer of ever growing collection of special midget tools).

by the way, that is also a good picture of a bad ww hub. see the wear at the inner edge.

...and the prize for thinking outside the box goes to Ms Harvey...

Thanks, just the sort of tip I was after

The next question is...how to get the split pin out of the hub/stub axle nut?
Dave O'Neill 2

turn the hub so that the cotter pin lines up with the hole in the side of the hub. then reach some long nose pliers in there to unbend the cotter pin and then tease it out the hole in the side of the hub shaft.

And yes your's has a hole as well most likely hiden with grease.
The other option is to just turn the nut off and tap out the remains of the splitpin

By far the easiest way.

You can cut the heads off the bolts with a slitting disc in a grinder. Be careful not to damage the hub though. I found that the bolts had been rounded off due to previous efforts to remove them and so they needed to be replaced anyway

I use a good quality skinny ring spanner made even more skinny by grinding the outer end down.
