MG Midget and Sprite Technical - wiring loom
I'm just wondering what differences there are between the 1275 and 1500 wiring looms. I'm doing a ground up resto and will be replacing the loom but in the process I want to convert to an alternator so I was thinking it might be easier just to use one designed for the 1500 rather than messing around with extra wires ans whatnot. Of course if there are other differences then I'll convert a 1275 one. On a similar vein, my old car had courtesy light switches but no lamps. Where would the lamps be situated? Graeme |

i don't know exactly, because i don't have a 1500, but i would think the differences would be more than you want to deal with. on the 1500 engine, the distributor (and hence the coil, etc) is on the opposite side from the A-series engine, the heater fan is on the other side of the car. and I am sure there are other things. The late 1275's had alternators. Just buy a loom for one of the later 1275 a series engine and all the wires you need will be there. |

Hi Graeme, I did exactly what you're considering. The PO had done a bodge to the wiring when installing an alt, whcih worked fine but looked a mess. The loom I got was from one of the alternator 1275 cars, which moss tells me is from G-AN5-138801 onwards. Fitted my converted car perfectly. I was lucky to pick it up from eBay for £20, Moss want £170. The 1500 has a number of differences - hazard warnings and oil pressure light spring to mind and I'm sure there are more. The interior lamp screws up to the underside of the dash more or less under the MG logo. It's the shiny thing between the logo and the gearstick in this picture. Hope that helps... Mark |

Hi Graeme, if all you want to do is fit an alternator then I would probably think it best to use your existing loom and far cheaper. When I get home I will be publishing on the MGCC midget register website a simple step by step procedure for installing an alternator in place of the dynamo. Essentially 3 choices are avalable for wiring. Completely rewire. Change the wiring around or finally change connections within the regulator box so that externally the wiring loom remains almost the same. I think it is worth a look before you decide. Just give me a couple of weeks. |

If you go for a new loom 1275 alternator type there are two versions - with/without hazards. I fitted a new loom to my Heritage reshell and fitted the earlier alternator loom (no hazards) as I think MarkH has - only difference was it was wired for the later electronic tacho (RVC type) and I seem to remember needing to change an odd bulb holder in one Instrument. A good investment as looms seem to get hacked about etc over the years and have dodgy connections etc. R. |

Thanks for the replies guys.... bob - My old loom is completely shot - more cracked wires than you could shake a stick at - so I'll be buying a new one anyway. However, I'm not expecting to have the shell painted till late june so I can certainly hang on to read your article. Could you post a link to it here when you've done please? cheers Graeme |
