MG Midget and Sprite Technical - WIX Filter Anyone ?

Whoops I ordered the wrong item from Moss USA now I am beginning to see why I need to wear my reading glasses when I am working on my car...

Anyway, its not worth the cost to send it back for credit and I dont want to toss it into the trash, so...if you are in any of the American Colonies on this side of The Pond just ask for it and its yours...

In the spirit of midget-man-ship, I will toss a few bucks into getting it to you...who knows, this might be the beginning of a new barter system whereby Spridgeteers can toss parts AT each other rather than tossing them OUT...

Here is the problem: received MOSS part #950-020 when I should have ordered #950-045

Hey Im NOT trying to turn this forum into eBay but somebody out there must have a compatible engine AND a dirty oil filter...

Mike -

What's that filter designed to fit?

Cheers,

Gryf:

On page 8 [external engine category] of the Spring/Summer 2010 Moss Catalog – item #89 is for a 1275 engine...$10.95...but, from past posts, I believe that you are motoring in a black 1500 with a biscuit interior...No?

Perhaps the other Evil Twin Brother? Know anyone out your way who has a 1275cc...if so, pass along this email: mike AT bella mia candy dot com

That is a filter for canisters. I believe they were used in the early 1275 and 1098 motors.
My '72 has a spin on filter # 950-045 or 950-545

I use K+N oil filters I get at my local NAPA

Well, black with Autumn Leaf... ;-) Actually, I wasn't interested in the filter myself. Just trying to help ID it for any folks who might be able to use it.

BTW, if anybody's interested - I get my Midget oil filter from NAPA, specifically the NAPA Gold series. I don't recall the number at the moment, but those filters are, as I understand, made by WIX and are therefore very good.

Gryf, I just changed my oil and was going to use a NAPA Gold filter but it turned out to be a good bit longer/taller than the other filters. It actually made it more difficult to change. So, I got a K&N and not only is it shorter, but it has a nice nut welded to the bottom so you can get it off easier. That was important as I had one heck of a time getting the old one off. Some idiot (the DCO!) put it on too tight and I had trouble getting a wrench up in there, gripping it tightly and unscrewing it. I was finally able to break it loose before reverting to driving a screwdriver through it but was wondering what wrench other people use. I realize there are thousands of different filter wrenches, but if anyone has one they have found is particularly nice to get up to a 1275 spin-on filter, grips securely and doesn't require a huge amount of room to turn, I would appreciate a description, or better yet, a picture.
Thanks,
Jack

Jack,

I got the wrench that looks like a channel lock then stuck the jaw section in a vice and beat it with a ball pen hammer to about about 60 degrees side ways angle...its still a bear to get to and grip, but cleaner then the screw driver thur the side of the filter trick which pours oil out all over the chassis rail and down the side of the block....When i eventually get an oil cooler Im going to do a remote oil filter to make it much easier to remove and install the filter.

The filter is easier to access on a 1500, fortunately. I use a strap wrench to remove it, and install the new ones with hand-tightening only.

Phil,
The K&N oil filters do not share the good reputation of their air filters. You might want to reconsider. The Wix is a much better filter, as is the NAPA Gold (which is a re-labeled Wix). One of the local racers has one of the fancy cutters to open the oil filters and I have had the opportunity to see inside of most of the ones available around here. Wix is good.

O.K. guys - it's time to close this thread out...

I really wanted to pass this filter along to somebody, but it seems this thread has morphed into a discussion of competing brands & styles and turned into a "who's-on-first" routine...

So, it seems nobody wants my WIX filter, so it's time to throw this $10.95 item into the garbage...

Sincerely,

Mike & Abbott & Lou
