MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Worn out brake adjusters
My back brake adjusters are Knackered ! The threaded portion in the brake backplate seems to be oversize, such that the (new) adjuster wont grip the threads. When bought, the adjusters were seized with rust, which required mucho heat to free off. Do I need a new backplate, or are there other options ? Thanks |

The simlest method would be to renew the backplates, but I have a feeling they are NLA.... You may find some good S/H on here is you ask.... Mark. |

Are the new adjusters made locally? |

You should be able to renew the threads with a Heli-coil or Re-Coil. One place that I know if that carries them is Uni Thread http://www.uni-thread.com/ in Devon. Cheers - Dave |

David, in an ideal world you are right, but the wall thickness of the female threaded part of the back plate is not thick enough to carry a Heli-Coil or Re-Coil. I guess also the cost of this exercise would be far and above the cost of S/H back plates. Mark. |

As Mark suggests, get some s/hand plates, making sure the threads are ok. Wesh MG Centre is usually pretty helpful. Cheers John |

I am tempted to get a nut of the coorect size and weld it to the backplate. Given the thread size it would be a huge nut tho ! |

Andy Jennings - http://www.mgcars.org.uk/andyjennings/mg-midget-parts.htm Worth a call to see if he has any backplates bearing in mind an axle case was only about £30... |

ISTR that too thick a threaded bit will stop the adjuster adjusting in enough to be effective you could also try PBW for second hand backplates Paul often has good S/H parts available 0121 554 3000 |
