Production officially ended in April 2005, although some cars were left part finished on the line, possibly being finished sometime later by Nanjing. So a 2006 could be one of those, or one finished by MG/Rover but left languishing in a dealer. You would need to look at the chassis plate to get a better idea of when it was actually built. Someone has claimed between 150 and 300 Mk2 (2004) hatches (mine's a saloon). The last known 180 is said to be SARRTVWND5D656509, but like the mgb roadster and GT all the ZS models were from a common range of numbers. Commission numbers started from 251 (as with many Abingdon models, 251 being the old factory telephone number). http://google.mg-rover.org/search.php?searchid=10721112 has a number of submissions from owners as to their plate and number which might give you a clue, 26582 on a 55 plate being the highest listed, bearing in mind the variable time between production date and registration date.
