MG ZR ZS ZT Technical - MG 'Tailban' start to jump ship!

On a few other sites, members of the MG "tailban" are now openly talking about jumping ship! They admit that their leg was well and truly lifed by MGR.

Piss poor service, piss poor cars, old designs etc.

I had hoped with the coming of the TF that MG would start to turn around.......but no.

No sign of the ZT V8's don't even talk about the 60! With TWR going belly up that's i am told going to cause a BIG delay as well.

What i can't suss is WHY MGR didn't drop the 1.8 Turbo into the ZS and ZR? Just leave it at 160 BHP. Allow the owners to "experment". They might like to sort the driving polsition out as well!

BTW did you lot read "CAR" this month, their ZT V6 kept true to form and at 13,000 miles blew big time!

They have asked for anyone with ZT V6 which did the same to write in.......Oh BOY! Are they in for a surprize!

Tailban, is this some new euphemism for homophobics? Is Mega inhabiting some nasty "queer bashing" site somewhere on the net? - it would explain his sad and rather depressing view on life - or this could just the understandable result of having to live in Liverpool, the acrid armpit of the world!
Patrick Beet

Yes,mostly rubbish but some items which had also been of concern to other readers eg delay of V8s,
no ZS Turbo etc
Don R

I suspect the V8s have been delayed for very sound commercial reasons.

The market for 4 litre cars is small and must be shrinking faster than a snowball in hell. The increase in oil prices, economic downturn and the risk of war are all going to make people wary of this sort of car more than most.. It is a complete none starter as a company car unless you are super rich and then would you want an MG badged 75? Even in a rosy, prosperous world you will need to find private buyers who want a car that does 15 mpg and offers a range per tank of around 180 miles in exchange for performance that you cannot hope to use on anything other than a race track or Autobahn.

If you have only limited funds then it would seem a good idea to focus on making a product that will sell in large numbers and keep the boys working. These funny cars with ridiculous engines and power might excite pimply youths - but pimply youths do not buy cars!

Why would they be jumping ship?

< (c) 2003 Birmingham Post & Mail Ltd

MG ROVER today bounced back from a grim start to the year to notch up a healthy 22 per cent sales boost last month, it was revealed. The car maker drove up its UK showroom success with 3,700 MGs and Rovers cars snapped up in February against a little over 3,000 for the same month last year.

Much of the credit for the improved performance was put at the door of a marketing drive offering new owners free fuel for a year.

Company chiefs said the eye-catching campaign, which gives buyers up to 1,000 to spend at garages depending on the size of the vehicle bought, has captured the imagination of the public. The independent group fell badly in January when it saw British sales plunge 29 per cent to 5,162 units, giving it less than three per cent of a lower home market.

But spokesman Kevin Jones said the free-fuel initiative, which is being promoted under the banner 'Gordon Brown wouldn't like this', had helped reverse the situation.

He said it was difficult at the turn of the year to excite buyers and it was only towards the end of January that showrooms woke up. 'I am sure the free fuel offer has played a great part in February's figures. It seems to have struck a chord with customers and the sales reflect that,' he said.

'January was a poor month for the industry as a whole and as the year closes there is little chance of promoting things which are coming up over the next few months.' The dependable Rover 25 proved the group's bestseller while its MG version, the ZR, put in a 'very good performance' to maintain its top spot in the 'hot hatch' segment of the market. >

Patrick,
I don't think the 260 HP V8 is so outrageous even in today's climate. At under 30K it would represent excellent value for the smaller professional partnerships.
Don R

The headline message is that the car has a 4 litre engine focussed on high performance. That means it will have a painfully high insurance group (20+?), a ravenous thirst and terrible range. Even with a price of 30k will have huge tax implications as a company car. In short the chances of selling it as a company car are miniscule.

The only hope is private buyers and a private buyer who does not care about insurance, fuel consumption of range is already spoilt for choice. Worse, people tend to buy outrageous cars when times are excellent. Dear Mr Blair has caused the largest percentage fall in the UK market for 70 (?) years today and that after the market has halved in the last 3 years. This indicates that the market thinks this government is courting financial disaster and that is not the sort of conditions to encourage people to buy outrageous cars!

While not wishing to sound Megaesque, I think New Labour is about to make the Wilson government look like financial wizards. We live in frightening times.

Your flogging a dead horse on here trying to educate the Taliban Old guard, some are even deluded into thinking the MG maestro was a good car.
Its been two years since MG rover unvieled the Zed range and what have they done to improve the Zeds in them two years and keep up with the competition???
cutting back on the trim levels and adding nasty wing mirrors to the ZT and the icing on the cake------Atomix Zeds :D
We want cars that can compete with the CTR and the Leon cupra R not lightweight special editions called Atomix.

Although at the moment would be a bad time to launch the V8's in europe i believe a golden opportunity awaits in the states.
Alot of americans are extemely pissed off with some of our europeon acquaintances with sales of Prestige german cars on the slide. What better way could there be for americans to thank their greatest friend than buying lots of ZTV8's ;)

So a few ZT's have blown their engines? What, not been run in properly? Nobody bothered to check oil level on an engine known to use a drop of oil like every other engine when worked hard?

Haven't noticed loads of 800/75 owners or Freelander owners complaining of blown engines, so it can't be a bad design.

Is the KV6 afflicted by HGF? The K4 certainly is, my friend suffered this. Based on the fact that he used to start up, drive a mile or so to the office revving the nuts off the block, and then wondered why he has a rusted out exhaust system, and, I suspect, a contributory factor in the HGF.

m moore , why bother wanting for a car that compares to a leon cupra, why not just go out n' buy one. as for the "keeping up with the competition", i didnt see seat do a low budget motor to keep up with MG'S zr range ????. Now now settle down ...... bit touchy and sense of humour a little scarce here for some methinks. I too struggled a little with Darren's "texting" type effort but got the jist of it anyway. Darren has an MGZR so is obviously a discerning motorist but, why he discriminates against Teds ..... his mum was probably scared by a teddy bear or boy when carrying him or, more likely Darren's attempt at humour which was they way I read and appreciated it ... LOL.

mmoore - some of his comments must not be allowed to pass without response.

He's the one with the big wooden spoon! Appears severely blinkered by believing that only K series engines ever suffer from head gasket failure. So, why do so many contributors here insist on perpetuating this HGF myth? By coincidence, just recovered a work colleague's partner's Toyota Corolla from Gatwick with my trusty old Montego Turbo and trailer. The Toyota's head gasket failed on the way to the airport using airport transfers tunbridge wells and now needs more than a gasket, lots of cracks so a replacement cylinder head is required. As it happens, the car was taken to dealership in East Grinstead and they removed the head to assess what was needed. I wont bore you with similar stories of other colleagues' Volvos and BMWs which suffered similar HGFs. Like me, you've probably seen the odd one or two on the motorway hard shoulder steaming away nicely.

What is particularly annoying about moore's contribution is when he mistakenly appears to speak for us all with comments like:

>>We want cars that can compete with the CTR and the Leon cupra R not lightweight special editions called Atomix.<<

We... WE? .... I DON'T ! Neither do many many others like the now numerous MGZR/ZS/ZT owners I'm pleased to see on our roads. Which makes moore's "We" statement inaccurate. If they wanted a SEAT or buzzy Focus clone they'd get one ...

So, please, a little more humour combined with seriousness .... it is possible. Something I'm trying to acquire but obviously my quest continues ........ :O))

Shame about Mega's terminal decline .... or ...

As JMcF says a little more humour is needed especially if you realise these boards are the electronic equivalent to Speakers Corner where you can not choose who you talk to, and when you join in what is obviously a 'Wind Up' thread to heckle then you must expect to be counter-heckled.

BTW as I have said in another thread there is great article on the ZT-T in todays Telegraph!.

Translation, using Babelfish (mobile phone text to English) ;)

Addressee: M. Moore,

Why would you bother wanting a car that compares like for like with a Leon Cupra? If this is the case, why don't you visit your nearest Seat dealership and purchase one?

With regard to 'keeping up with the competition' i don't believe Seat have a car in the same niche as the MG ZR (i.e. a car in the same price bracket as the aforementioned ZR, but with similar performance).

You might want a car in which to break the land speed record [note from Smiley, surely even a Leon Culpra would struggle to do this?], but in the immediate vacinity of the place where i hale from, the Police have erected a significant number of revenue cameras. As an aside i would like to know if anyone of sound mental ability would want to have a sticker applied to them with the words 'boy-racer' embossed thereupon? Said stickers, in the opinion of this writer, became unfashionable in the mid to late 1980's along with a popular group of that time going under the moniker of BROS. In this last point i may be mistaken, judging by the comments you made in your opening piece.

Even tough you weren't offering me a Seat Leon Culpra i will decline anyway and carry on in the ownership of my defecated on, aging MG ZR that has been perfectly reliable and was a very reasonable 11,300 despite the fact that it has been fitted with a significant number of optional accessories.

Hope this helps Ted

Addressee: Ted,

Why are you frivolously spending your time as a singular personage with an opinion that others would find of no interest by employing your skills with a computer in order to copy my previous posting and insert it into a new posting? This is a skill that the majority of children aged 7 have at this particular time, on this particular day. Addressee: None, posting appears to be a comment to the board in general

Cor = Anglo-Saxon slang expression, usually employed to convey surprise. By opening your eyes and using them to convert images into signals that your brain can understand you will be able to discern the fact that Ted appears to have someone else who not only shares his opinion but also is prepared to express said opinion. From this i have deduced that David must be involved with Ted in some kind of long-term relationship. My opinion on this relationship is that it is nice and i wish you happiness in your chosen lifestyle. You are most welcome Ted.

From the translations it appears that the writer is an ardent fan of the MG marque and in general all things British. It is my opinion that his poor use of the English language is therefore not grounds to ridicule his arguments, only his spelling and punctuation.

Some errors are acceptable in a forum such as this, but the deliberate 'b*stardisation' of the Queens English on a forum that has an international readership isn't really acceptable as he is alienating a significant number of people. These people, for whom English is not thier first language, will find it difficult to ascertain the writer's comments and this effectively weakens the argument through a lack of contributions.
