The car looks stunning from the front (there is a picture on Steve Child's site) - and the ZS180 pictured, you can just make out the SV-like air outlet 'gills' :o)

Looks as though both the 45 and the ZS will be launched on the same day: the 20th April...
Rob Bell

Roger,

Thanks for the heads up - saw the face lifted R45 in the local dealership recently. Look forward to seeing the new ZS although I quite like the original look.

BTW, read that you've sold your ZS. May I ask what you're currently smokin'?...;-) (Please forgive use of 1960s MotorTradeSpeak)

John.
John McFeely

Rob,

>>purposeful stance << I does love a purposeful stance !!

Hmmmm.... way to go..;-)
John McFeely

I'm really looking forward to seeing the whole car John - I've always liked the look of the "booted" 400 and I am very curious to see what's been done here. And of course, what the new interior looks like!
Rob Bell

It's impressive and note the specific reference to a wider track, it will be interesting to see how this has been achieved in detail. But for inadequate room up front for 8 cylinders I would have been replacing the ZS180 for this new one, especially as the changes do address almost all of the previous points attracting negative comment. However, the presence of a ZT with rear wheel drive and V8 power is, I have to say, too much for me to pass by, and so that is the new set of wheels, once some additional electronic additions have been fitted by the factory and the car released.

Rog
Roger Parker

So the V8 ZT hasn't arrived just yet Rog? Bags a ride when you get it :o)

>> It's impressive and note the specific reference to a wider track, it will be interesting to see how this has been achieved in detail. <<

I wonder if this will be down to different offsets on the alloy wheels? Certainly, this would be the easiest way to achieve this difference as all the remaining suspension componentry would remain essentially unaltered other than changes to damper and spring rates - and possibly suspension bushes too (MG have proven remarkably adept at effecting remarkable differences in handling through differing bush designs)...

Looks cool to me.

Scarlet Fever

Autodistress have a rear aspect shot of the new ZS180. Not sure if this is a photo-shopped effort, but if genuine, then the back end of the new car is a little disappointing: I think I prefer the old boot design :o/

Fingers crossed that the new dash cuts more of ... erm ... a dash ;o)
Rob Bell

Yep seen this pic too, hold on i'll see if i can dig out a URL...

Personally i really like this - clean, modern, uncluttered look - very nice indeed.

But...

Needs the extreme rear spoiler and would be better still with twin exhausts, one each side.

:-)

SF
Scarlet Fever

Agree with you Rob,unless its the angle, the car has a rather large bum....too many horses perhaps??
Tony

Too many cream cakes I think Tony :o/

I agree with Andy though: would probably look better when finished off with the old ZS180 tea-tray boot spoiler! Will this be an option for the new car?

No K2000 yet - but I did spot in Autocar that the new Caterham 7 R500, weighing in at a hefty 42 grand, does come with this engine, complete with 250 horses in standard tune...

K2000 doesn't seem to be getting any closer to being a production reality just yet does it?
Rob Bell

Just had a look at Scarlet's URL of the ZS rear end...... The "Does my Ar5e look big in this" rear end does seem to be the way several manufacturers have gone or are now going. Indeed, one French outfit has highlighted this very fact with it's "Shake a little Ass" TV car adverts. If that ZS picture is a true image of the final design, I'd be surprised because to my eyes, it does not look finished. As is often the case however, the 'in the flesh' image may be rather different so I'm reserving judgement.

Is it merely an effect of that particular picture image or can I detect vents high and just behind the front wheel arches above the indicator swide repeaters? ...surely not.

JMcF.
John McFeely

I wonder how the back of the 5 door hatch might look.Anyone have a picture?
(The front of the car is very impressive)
alex

Yes Alex,pretty good.
Could we perhaps reincarnate the
word "Magnette" like was done for the TF?
george

This Tuesday will reveal many more images both inside and out. In respect of the Auto Distress image, I feel some critism can be pointed towards them for not complying with embargo dates.

Let me just add one point for you to note when looking at the extra images from Tuesday and considering judgement, that the lip spoiler is a standard feature, but that two alternative bigger spoilers are to be cost options.

Rog
Roger Parker

Embargo dates or not, if the rear end still looks that on tuesday, that boot is still horrid!!
Kelvin

Kelvin
Think of all that bare metal on the bootlid as being a whole blank canvas for all the Max-Power stickers!
Martin
Martin ZT

Kelvin,
There may be an alternative boot as a cost option!
(or that of the 5 door may be better?)
Tony

Martin, I dont know what you mean, I'm sure!
(~BIG GRIN~)

Kelvin

They were working late all weekend to modify the design Kelvin!
DonR

Still a few hours to go before the embargo is lifted and I've seen the complete set of pictures. I like the front, the sides, but still dont like the bootlid. Interior is 'cool' too :-)

MG ZS product summary

The new MG ZS has a striking exterior treatment, combining a sculpted new front bumper, front grille and twin lens headlamps to generate a greater on-road presence, with a more modern style. The front bumper includes an integrated lip spoiler, which substantially improves the stance and aero performance of this sports saloon.

At the rear, the ZS has a new appearance, with a new, more angular rear bumper and rear boot / tailgate treatment with a lower re-positioned number plate position. This lowers the eye-line to give the car a more defined rear, whilst the addition of a rear lip spoiler (to all MG ZSs, both 5dr and 4dr body styles) helps to change the rear profile of the car considerably.

Another major exterior difference on the new MG ZS is the availability of an all new "body kit" treatment, standard on ZS 180 derivatives, and available as an option on the ZS range. This body kit includes front and rear wheelarch spats, front fender vents, and side sill finisher. The features have a major effect on the appearance of the car, giving it a much more muscular appearance and increase the differentiation of the ZS 180 vs the standard cars from the rest of the range, and take-up is expected to exceed demand from the current status.

New 17" 11-spoke alloy wheels are specified on the new ZS 180, and because they have a larger 7.5J rating, effectively improving steering response, they further enhance the already superb chassis handling characteristics. These will be standard on the ZS 180, and an option on the rest of the range when specified as a package with the optional body kit.

The incorporation of a new fascia design transforms the interior of latest MG ZS, and includes satin chrome circular vent treatments that add more definition and a more striking appearance. A new Technical Grey insert finisher completes the sporting character of the cabin.

New Features

Air Temperature Control

A key new comfort specification feature introduced on MG ZS is Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) air conditioning. This luxury feature allows the precise desired temperature of the air conditioning to be set, in Fahrenheit or Centigrade, with an external temperature display and solar sensor compensation. The new control panel is fully integrated in the console. This feature is standard on ZS 180, and available as an option on ZS+ models.

Remote Activated Boot Release

A new feature for the latest ZS is the remote activated boot release feature. This customer convenience feature allows a key owner easier access to the boot of the car; by pressing a third button on the remote plip, the owner can release the boot lock while approaching the car. The boot will then be open by the time they get to the car, and is particularly useful when either or both hands are full.

The interior also features revised column stalks that have a superior feeling matt finish. The switches used within the revised centre console are soft-touch membrane switches that look and operate in a more positive and modern way.

At service, the program wash / wipe facility can be programmed to vary the number of times the wipers operate after the windscreen wash has finished. A new 'Dribble Wipe' feature is an extra wipe of the screen approximately 4 seconds after the last wipe has occurred, after the program wash wipe, to capture any subsequent water dribble.

Greater Security and Locking Protection

Auto relocking - if the car is locked / armed and the unlock button pressed, the car will auto lock / rearm if no doors are opened within 30 seconds and assumes the vehicle was unlocked / disarmed accidentally.

Speed locking - doors automatically lock when vehicle speed is greater than 3 mph / 5 km/h. The doors remain locked when the vehicle is stationary and will automatically unlock again when the ignition is turned off. Doors can be unlocked by using the master lock / unlock button.

MG ZS performed well in recent What Car? Security tests and has a Thatcham
Cat. 1 alarm, top level security system and complies with the latest 2004 Security directives. The alarm system uses a battery backed up sounder, located within a shielded enclosure and protected with tamper proof fixings, which will activate if the power supply is tampered with.

Audible mislock - features a short horn sound if door / boot / bonnet are open when the vehicle is locked with the key or remote. The boot is more secure now the key lock is no longer specified and Automatic Engine immobilisation is activated after the ignition is switched off.

Remote locking feature

The new remote plip has a changing lock / unlock code every time it is used. No thief could record (or capture) the code then use it later. A new design of plip now features lock, unlock and remote boot release opening. It can be operated with the alarm armed or disarmed. The alarm rearms when the boot is closed, with hazard warning lamps flashing to indicate this security. The latest plip design has a much enhanced operating range.

Master Locking Switch

This new feature is located amongst the switches in the new centre console. It offers a greater degree of security as the car can instantly lock all of the doors, regardless of ignition or engine state, with a single press of the button; also included is drive-away locking for occupant security against possible external threats. A panic alarm can be triggered by pressing the MLS for over two seconds, locking all doors, activating the alarm siren and flashing the hazard lamps and de-activated by another two second press or by pressing the plip unlock button.

Exterior Colours

Solid: Rio Red, Trophy Yellow

Metallic: Starlight Silver, XPower Grey, Ignition Blue

Pearlescent: Firefrost Red, Royal Blue, British Racing Green, Black Pearl and Goodwood Green

Interior Colour and Trim Availability

The MG ZS features an Ash interior colour and the new fascia design includes a new re-positioned fascia insert, available in two finishes: the standard condition is Technical Grey, however there is also a Black Oak optional finish. Seat trims include a new Matrix fabric available in three colourways - grey, green and blue. These seats will be the standard condition on ZS entry and ZS+ models.

Axis part leather seats feature on the 180 and are also available in three colourways - grey, green and blue. The leather is black in all cases and appears on the side bolsters. The Axis part leather seats feature horizontal fluting effects for greater visual impact and further support. A black full leather sports seat and Gunsmoke Alcantara¨ seat are an option.

More pix have been released (I guess you'll be able to find them in the news section here and on MG-Rover.org and XPF).

Unfortunately, the boot DOES look like the Autodistress images...

The new interior is a very welcome improvement over the old one - and is a very clever, low cost remake. Lawrence L-B would be impressed ;o)

Still no images of the 5-door available - nor indeed of the larger optional bootlid spoilers...
Rob Bell

Hated the boot to start with.

The extra pics and angles make it look better and it's growing on me!! I may even be forced to say that I like it!!

Looking at the complete package... it's really turned a rather dated package into a very desirable and current one. I think MGR have done a really good job on this one.

Paul Nothard

The dash is a massive improvement - they had some great pictures in MG Enthusiast. Big bum look is not great though and I agree with all those above - the old wing spoiler should be available.

I saw a Y-reg ZS180 with big spoiler in Trophy Blue today and it looked great - difficult to believe that the model is 3 years old now.

The hatchback now looks better though and an improvement over the old one which for me was not different enough from the rear of the Rover 400/45 hatch.
