MG MGA - 1800 conversion / high starter mounting
I am working on my 1800 conversion. The new engine and transmission I am using have the "high" starter mounting where the original 1500 engine & transmission that I removed had the "lower" starter mountng. Will I have to make any modifiactions to the firewall or floorboard for this "higher" mounted starter setup? |

Danny, Check Barney Gaylord's site at: http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/gearbox/gt101.htm Among much other gearbox information he says: "To use the high starter position in earlier cars you need to install the later front tunnel section and frame bulkhead panel (or modify the early parts accordingly)". Danny, It might be easier to use the low starter bell housing with your 1500 engine backing-plate bored out to accept the 1800 rear seal. Alternatively I read that an alternative starter can be installed to avoid the need of modifying the foot well. I can't recall what they are called, high-torque starters? They are modern starters that do don't physically extend far enough toward the back of the car to foul the foot well. They do however cost $200 or so. Steve |
