MG MGA - 1st Gear Syncro conversion or 5th gear

I was reading the thread on Gear Grinding and then got side tracked

Has anyone heard of someone fitting 1st gear syncro to these boxes, for those of us who don't use the stump pulling diff ratio.

I know the mini guys can now get a 5th gear jammed in some how.

And for my old 73 911, which has a crap 1st gear syncro they sweat on a later bit onto the gear and use a different syncro ring.

Conversely, we could keep the stump pulling diff and install a 5th gear like the Mini's.

Companies like Autogear.co.uk seem to be creative enough to come up with 3.7 banjo diff ratios never before available, so maybe this is possible also.

Any Thoughts? or am I showing my lack of gearbox knowledge here.

Mark, I haven't heard of any such mods to the original case. If it's strictly a street car, then swapping in a 5 speed isn't too big a deal. If you are racing and have to keep the original case then I suggest you contact Kent Prather who is a 6 time G Production SCCA national champ and see what he recommends as far as transmission mods. http://www.networksplus.net/kprather/

Mark, there is a very rare racing gearbox which is simply an MGA box with a 5th OD ratio added on.

They built very, very few of them and ironically did not use them in the MGA, but rather in the Sprites such as the ones at Le Mans and Sebring.

Good luck finding one, but at least it proves that the factory was open to such modification. I believe they either cast or welded an extra bulge in the gearbox casing to accomodate the new cluster. Maybe we have some Spridget racing historians on the site who can add something?
