MG MGA - 4th of July

I know I'll be accused of being superstitious, but I need to get this off my chest. Here goes.

Last Friday, it became apparent that the solenoid on the starter of my MGB-V8 was gone. No problem, I already had a starter, so ordered some gaskets to do the job right. On Saturday, I removed the generator from my TD as the fan was loose and creating a noise. Turned out the keyway was worn and the woodruff key was not holding it in place. Took it to an electrical shop who said they could get it back to me by Wednesday. Again, no problem.

Then things began to get ugly. The fuel pump on my MGC failed on Sunday. Nearly caused an accident. No one expects a car to suddenly fail, do they? Ordered a new one. On Monday, while I was waiting on the TD's generator, I decided to change the plug wires on the TD. Broke a plug terminal (the really hard-to-find Rajah one). Placed another order. At this point I became wise to the situation, and did nothing to these cars on Tuesday. I called the electrical shop today. The manager made the repair well enough, then dropped the generator and broke the pulley. Heaven knows when /if/how he will fix this.

So why am I posting this on the MGA board? Because I did not touch the A! It is safely in the garage, and will stay there until this storm has passed.

It must be something in the DNA of these cars. If you are an American owner, beware, do not fiddle with them on July 4th weekend!

We have a long history of ghosts over in the UK. There is one for every occasion. You must have got one of the Abingdon Friday afternoon specials. He was probably taking a nap in your car on the production line after a heavy lunchtime with other spirits and got trapped. Were any of your cars built in July?

Tom - Get rid of all those MG's and buy a Mazda Miata. mick

PS- Drop me a note when you get a minute I need to talk with you a bit. You ARE coming to the Pittsburgh Vintage Gran Prix next weekend aren't you !!!!

Tom, I must be in luck, I didn't work on any of my 3 MGs over the July 4 weekend. Instead, I constructed a tent garage on the side of the house (Costco 10'x 20') so I now have somewhere to paint the parts for my A Coupe. Everything went great and I now have a wonderful paint booth.

See you soon,

Well, I must have beat the curse. After almost two weeks of unbearably sweltering weather in the mid to upper 80s, I drove my MGA to work on the 3rd, expecting little traffic. Not only was there not much traffic, but we were blessed with Puget Sound's "natural air conditioning", aka *overcast*, which kept the morning cool, cleared about noon, and made for a wonderful sunny drive home in the mid 70s! A perfect drive.
