MG MGA - 5 Speed Gear Box

Hi guys,

I want to do a 5-speed conversion on my "A".

Can anyone tell me if the 2-wheel drive Ford MT75 5 speed gearbox can be used in place of the standard Ford Sierra Type 9?

I've seen HighGear engineering list a "2.8" gearbox with a "large" first gear option or a "closer ratio" option.

Is there a difference in ratios between the 2 Wheel Drive Sierra-fitted MT75 and the Transit van (Diesel)-fitted MT75?

Many thanks,

Grant :-)

PS yes, there is a copy of this posting on the "B" technical board, I'm just trying to get as may responses as possible. Cheers :-)

I suggest you give Peter Gamble at Hi Gear a ring on 01332 514503. I have found him to be very helpful.

I have run a Sierra Type 9 box for about the last 4-5 years and find it a delight.

Hi

The MT75 box is an aluminiun unit with integral bell housing and will not fit

Steve/Terry,

Many thanks for your help. I'll contact Peter at High Gear for more "2.8" details.

Cheers,

Grant :-)

Hi Gears info sheet states that the 2.8L Sierra gear box ( and those the Transit vans) is unsuitable as its primary shaft is too long - the 2.8 versions in their literature must be the type 9 box with the 2.8 ratios substituted - the price at £600+ is rather steep - you can buy a complete Sierra for less than that- I am seriously considering the Hi Gear swap on a standard Sierra box as my box is terrible in 1st and second and it runs out of steam on the motorway at 60+mph - saw the engineering of the box at Stoneleigh on Sunday - it looked impressive - and Steve G sounds happy with his - Cheers Cam

Peter at Hi Gear is a very helpful chap - he'll put you right about anything you want to know. I've had one of his conversions using the Sierra box for about 2 years with no problems

I bought a Sierra box from a scrap yard for £50. Obviously, it is best if you know its history so that you know what you are getting. In my case the site owner was able to show the vehicle it came from, mileage etc. Yes, I took a risk, but all has been ok.

Hi Steve

I thought you bought your car from a scrap yard and had the sierra box thrown in !! What do you expect to get for £50, your 'A' hasn't even got a roof

Terry Drinkwater

You are absolutely right Terry. It came from the corner of a foreign field that is for ever England, err I mean California. Mind you, it took $4500 to buy it and get it back here!

Hi Steve

My coupe came from Swansea,I'm ashamed to admit it is half Welsh, half Cornish, half Somersetish. I'm not sure which halves though.

Spoken like a true mathematician from the west country!

How was Stonleigh? Sorry I could not make it. What are MGA spares prices looking like?

Sorry to hijack the 5-speed thread.

Hi Steve - Stoneleigh was busier than last year but still only the 2 halls open. Prices were pretty much as in the Moss catalogue and in some cases higher - "that's because it is genuine NOS sir, not like the new rubbish". The best prices seemed to be from 'Abingdon parts 4 MG' - part of the David Manners group - and they lived up to their name being very polite and helpful. Tried to get a timing cover oil seal from 2 suppliers but they didn't have them with them - "we can't carry everything I'm afraid".Someone outside was selling most of an A roadster - great if you needed a bonnet shroud or screen.( apologies to Grant again for hi jacking the thread!)
