MG MGA - 58 MGA Coupe/63 MGB parts swap???
I'm getting ready to buy a 58 Coupe, the seller also has a 63 B that goes with the A...my problem..I only have room to pick up one car and he is over a 1000 miles away. Both cars have been sitting outside for a number of years, not in an area of snow or lots of rain, but the B has the top off...My question is, other than taking out the B engine and trans, what other parts should I take with me that might be needed or that might fit the A for any other updates to the A..or that might be of any great value to sell. I have not seen the cars but do want to be prepared before I pick them up...Also, what quick checks can I make of the MGA's body to make sure that it's not a complete rust bucket, thanks... Mike |

Besides the Engine and tranny take the gages, calipers & differential "pumpkin". As far as rust, look for soundness of the inner sills and door pillers along with the frame where the floorboards meet the side rails. BOL, Doug |

As this is an early "B" take the parts that don't fit the later models, pull handle doors ,etc, they can be hard to come by. Look in the Moss cataloge, if it's not available, take it if you can. As it can be hard to see some of the rust on the A, open the doors and try moving them up and down. If there is slop check if it is the hinge, if not the pillers are rotted. Put some pressure on the rear door piller at the latch for the same reson. Use an ice pick along the floor edges to check the frame, make sure to go between the floor board and frame as it tends to rot even with the floorboard. Repairing this section of the frame is very straight foward and the frame panels are reasonable. |

When you take the differential pumpkin, don't forget to take the drive shafts. If it has Wire wheels, take the hubs too (these are part of the half shafts on a WW car) Take the front hubs too, but leave the kingpins. If there is a packaway hood frame with the B (one that is split in the centre of the car), take that and its slot in brackets. Take the front rail of the hood to go with it. Early B steel wheels are also hard to find. The rear light fittings are also special to the early B, take these if they are still there. The wiper motor is the same as an A. If the steering whhel is good, that is valuable too. |
