MG MGA - 700 Miles in one day.

After weeks of fine tuning I drove our (mine and my sons) 58 A from Boston to Ohio on Sunday. He is a student there in his junior year.

My little A went off to college.

He did most of the restoration work so he earned it, knows how to fix it, and respects it. So if you were on I90 in New York and saw a red A cruising around 65 mph that was me. Only problems were 2 slow leaks in brand new tires and it went through 3 quarts of oil!!!!

Oh well he will drive it only in the general area (I wrote down the miliage when I left) and he is under strict orders to stay in town and have his cell and a towing service with him.

After that run out I have total confidence he won't need either.

(BTW when I was working on the distributor a couple of weeks back, I had 3 plugs pulled (easier to bump to get the timing down) I went to check the spark and damned if it didn't start with only one plug. (I guess the timing was set right)

Should have said 723 miles

The last time I covered that many miles in my MG in one day, I was in college and my "A" was only 12 years old. Just last month, my MGA covered 3000 miles in a week, but it was on a trailer! Good luck to you and your son.

Try installing the upgraded valve stem seals as per Barney's site. I just did mine and cut my oil consumption by 80%.

Ken - I notice your rear licence plate is mounted under the bumper. Why, how?
Steven B

Looks like an early B fitting hung under the bumper

I built the bumper back in 1969 when my second "A" was my daily driver. It's few inches higher for better parking lot protection, and I had a trailer hitch on it. That car came with a euro style licence backing plate (long and narrow)which I mounted below my pipe bumper with the light turned sideways. When I finish this car (I've only had it since 1970), I'll probably use use some sort of overriders instead, something like a bugeye Sprite.

Back in the 60's I always mounted my licence plate under the bumper (when I had a bumper on). I reversed the mounting bracket and bent it slightly. My A's rear plates are now mounted like they were when they came from the factory but the lines are smoother whent they are maounted below the bumper I think.

Mine is also located below the bumper. I too feel it obstructs the beautiful lines of the "A". I figure it an easy change for the next guardian if he insist on being a purist!.

723 miles Good effort "R"

I once drove with a friend in his MGA from Perth to Brisbane in just over 36 hours for a Nat meet.... many years ago... 1990 I think.
I just looking on the web... it says 4055Km...

We did stop of 2 hours to wait for a petrol station to open at 6am. I guess with speed camera it would take longer these days.

So what's the most anyone has covered in a day?

Cheers
Mark.
