MG MGA - ABout to replace master cylinder
Hi, I'm expecting my replacement master cylinder from Moss this coming week. Should I expect to need to shim out the front cover to accommodate silicone brake fluid or do new MCs not need this? It probably easier to do this on the bench Thanks, Dave |

I am not sure if it is necessary or not. I used silicone fluid when I rebuilt my brake system about 5 years ago. I just used the standard gasket, and have had no problems. |

Hi David. Due to manufacturing irregularities, apparently some master cylinders require shimming and some do not. It might not hurt to assume the worst, and shim the master cylinder cover a bit, just in case. It would be a tricky operation to perform once the master cylinder was installed on the car. Cheers! I probably will not need shimming. That was a problem with certain seal kits where the rubber cup was too long. I haven't heard of that problem for about 10 years now, so hopefully it has been banished. If you do feel the need to cut the end gasket or install a new one or doubles, it can be done easily with the MC in the car. |

David, Be sure to check your part for mill ends, shavings, that may still be present. This happened to me and Moss sent me a new seal kit. Good luck, Neal Turner |
