MG MGA - Accident with a Semi
Some of you may be aware that George Merryweather, Vice Chair of NAMGAR, had a rather serious accident with his MGA on his return to Texas from the NAMGAR Regional GT in Key West. George is fine however his A did not fare so well. With George's permission I have created a page on one of my websites with the pictures of the accident. http://www.britishcarclub.net/accident/index.html Regards Rick |

Thats/'s the worst thing I've seen. I wish George my best. |

Glad your okay. Sorry about your car, any idea if it is repairable? Tom |

The car definitely looks repariable, I hope it is. |

BTW, George, I am glad you're ok, if you are reading this. My cousin got run over by a Semi, it happened the same way. |

Very happy you're ok, George. Wish you the best getting the car repaired. Paul |

Glad to hear that George is OK. The car looks repairable, perhaps, but it is a shame nonetheless. The A fared rather better than some might have expected which ought to be instructive about their suitability for travel under modern conditions. |

Glad George is OK. Looking at the pix and reading the account, he is very lucky. I was woundering about the extra wheels on the guardrail. I agree with the above. Car looks repairable. Will just need LOTS of time and money. I expect the trucking company will be supplying the later. After reading this, I may want to attach one of those bicycle flags to my car so this does not happen to me, although it has almost happened to me in my modern car several times since moving out west. Again, glad George is ok. Dennis, AZ |

Dennis The extra wheels are what is left of the small trailer that George was towing. Rick |

That is terrible! The main thing is that George is ok. But what a tragic thing to have happen. |
Steve Simmons |
Wow - glad George made it through that! |

What a shame. Very frightening indeed. The same thing happened to my wife a few years ago. She was in a Mitsubishi Eclipse (her car choice!), a semi was changing lanes and the front wheel lug nuts caught the rear wheel well, dragging her car along. It was a very slow speed incident thankfully, the driver claimed he never saw her car. |

Sacre Blue! Is that Bugsy or Mugsy. I have this picture from GT22 in 1997. http://mgaguru.com/ak/pic11/11-8.htm Several weeks earlier a semi passing another semi ran me off the road into guard rail, but with a lot less damage, swiping the left side and flipping the trailer. http://mgaguru.com/ak/pic1/1-1.htm http://mgaguru.com/ak/pic1/1-3.htm All best wishes for George, and hopes for a speedy recovery for the car. |

Damn sorry to see this-but could have been much worse - lucky George is ok. |

Get's me to thinking that now is the time to upgrade to DIESEL AIR HORNS. That way they may not see us ...but they sure would hear us. |

I had a semi run me off of I-40 on my way to the GT in N.Lake Tahoe. I was passing him on an uphill grade when he decided to pass the semi in front of him so not to lose his momentum. I saw him coming and went off the pavement into the desert median. A big rock clobered my rt. rear fender, but all else was okay. When I passed him again, he was yelling at me like it was my fault. I think he saw me from the very start. Just an a__ hole. I have since installed an air horn on the A. Tyler |

George, Hope all turns out well. I've had a long standing habit of avoiding trucks like the plague which PO's my wife...Until she saw this post. Best wishes, Doug |

Best wishes, George. Glad that you are okay, bet you were shaken up! It is a lesson for the rest of us. Tom |

I have to share my recent semi story, which was bad, but not near as bad as George's story. I was headed towards Florida in my trusty (rusty) FIAT 2000 when I was overtaken by a speeding semi. I flashed my lights as soon as I could see his face in the mirror. He proptly moved over and flashed a "thank you" on his tail lights. At that exact moment, his left rear tire exploded and huge parts of his tire flew over the top of my FIAT (top down). I almost wet my pants from the noise and dust cloud, not to mention the five pound pieces of rubber cascading through the air. I think he thought he hit me, because he put on the brakes so hard, I almost rear ended the guy. Everything turned out okay. I still have my front teeth and the FIAT has no (new) dents. Hope George gets his car fixed. |

The pictures tell a story, but I bet you had to be there to get the full effect! What a scary ride that must have been. I am nervous whenever near large trucks or SUVs, as they can't see us very well. I put some distance between them and us as soon as I can, but sometimes you are trapped and just have to ride it out. I have not shown the pictures to my wife as she is nervous already when on the freeways. I hope George gets fully compensated for the damage to his car, and the wear and tear on his heart! |
