MG MGA - adjustment of my weber carburetor
Installed by Weber 32/36 and set the idle as well as adjusting the timing. It worked well for several days but now I am having trouble. The car stalls when I idle. I have adjusted the idle screw weveral times and had RPM idle at 900 but when initiating the clutch it dies. After running for approx 10 minutes I can maintain the idle at 900. Any ideas? Michael, Webers are hypersensitive to float level. If I were you, I would start with that. good luck /gil |

Michael, Apparently this is a common complaint with the Weber DGV. I recently searched the archives for information to solve a similar problem on a newly acquired 74 B and found several suggestions. As Gil says your float level may be off. Also your carb may not be properly jetted for your engine. Even if the carb was new it may not be set up for an MGA engine. Since all Webers have an idle circuit and a midrange circuit it's important to make sure that you're not turning the idle speed screw too far in, therefore causing the throttle plate to be open into the midrange passages. Try to set the idle screw no more than 1/2 turn past where the screw engages the throttle lever, then adjust your idle speed to maximum with the mixture screw. You can then fine tune the idle with the speed screw. Be sure your accelerator pump is functioning properly. You should see an obvious stream of gas shooting into the carb when you open the throttle. One of the most frequent suggestions in the archive was to enlarge the accelerator pump jet. A #68 drill was the recommeded size. I had good results on my B by adjusting the idle (as above) and advancing the timing about 5 degrees. Good luck. Bill |
