MG MGA - Aluminum Brake drums
I was wondering if aluminum brake drums for the front and rear of the MGA are available. Alfin drums are quite rare, and do not work well. Thanks. andrew |

What are you trying for? Aluminum is not suitable for brake drums without a liner, and cast iron is the best for this. "Alfin" is a proprietary process which metalurgically bonds the CI to the aluminum. The alternative is steel liners, which suck for braking, and are rolled from sheet in the case of the "Minifin" drums I've seen, giving a discontinuous surface, with a built in warp point and lumpy braking. The Alfins I've experienced - AC & Alfa & Fiat, have been fine. There are alfins from Datsun 240Z which can be modified to fit rear brakes, but need a smaller brake, 9" by memory; good for the back but not adequate for fronts. FRM |
