MG MGA - Amature Mechanic Needs Help?...Epilogue
On my post of 10/08/07 I asked for help concerning a snapped off tap in one of the four holes used to secure my water pump on my '60 "A". Several of you made wonderful suggestions on how to remove said tap. I first purchased a "tap extractor kit" with which I was unable to grasp the flutes of the jammed tap. Next,I purchased a 5/16 inch "left-hand drill bit" and attempted to again extract the tap...no luck. Next I purchased 1/4 inch tungsten-carbide drill bit in hopes of drilling through the tap and splitting it. Here I had some limited success; however, my experience led me to believe that I wouldn't live long enought to accomplish this task. Next, I purchased a "Dremel" and "tungsten carbide bits". After, eight hours of running the Dremel, I finally pulverized the tap. Next, I purchased a "Helicoil kit" with tap and mandrel to fit a 5/16 inch hole. Hooray!!!...I've successfully repaired the hole! Thank you all for your sage advice and especially Mr. Keith Morris of Bisbane, Australia...since Dremel did the job. Please note that our british supply houses will send you one of three distinctly different housing sized water pumps, each requiring different lenghth 5/16 inch bolts to attach to your engine block. A DAAHH moment. |

Congratulations Tom! I've also received lots of great advice from this site. Reading the threads it seems that most problems get fixed. At least the suggestions never stop as long as they are requested. I believe the correct pump has not been available for some time, so the parts that are "sent" would be various aftermarket parts that will (may) fit. Neil |
