MG MGA - Antifreeze puddle

Happy Thanksgiving!

Since the car's been in storage I've come out on several occasions and have found a small puddle of antifreeze directly under where the transmission and the engine connect, with a corresponding drip of antifreeze hanging off the seam above.

Its most pronounced after I've run the car for a little while for occassional warm ups.

What's leaking? is there a spill pipe somewhere around there?

Thanks
Tysen

Tysen,
Check your engine for discolored paint and this may show you the leak. The rear head cover plate may be leaking or corroded, part no 76 in Moss catalog. My old one had a small rust pin hole in it. You may also have a freeze plug with a leak. Have a good day!

Tysen,
Sorry, I clicked the wrong icon. I thought I was in the MGT section!

Tysen-Check your heater valve above the distributor, they are problem leakers,or rear freeze plug, below rear of cylinder head in the engine block. Then let us know what you find, heater valve fix easy, rear freeze plug difficult. Good luck Gary

Have you checked the engine drain plug -- this turned out to be the cause of my antifreeze leak. Replaced it with a standard plug from the local parts store and the leak stopped.

With water dripping that far back it could be a rear core plug weeping.

It IS possible to replace the rear core plug without removing the engine. You have to remove the bulkhead plate and then you can get at the plug from inside the car. It's a contortionist job, but it CAN be done (if you are reasonably flexible and not too large). It took me 3 hours from start to finish. 1 hour of that was getting the plug in place and getting enough hits on it to make sure it would not leak again. (It was rusty - had not been replaced by a rebuilder)
