MG MGA - Backfire solved
Removing the valve cover I discovered the problem. The 5th rocker arm came off of the valve lifter. I guess I will need to borrow a spring compressor to put things right. Thanks for all the advise, it was right on in finding the problem. |

Now I would be wondering what caused/allowed the rocker to move out of it's proper location? |

No need to use a spring compressor, just loosen the rocker shaft bolts. Remember to re-set the tappet clearance for all eight valves when you're done. The adjuster nuts and threads become worn, so accurate adjustment may not be as easy as it should. The rocker coming off the pushrod could have been caused by the adjuster working loose. As always, check out Barneys site. Neil |

A valve sticking open temporarily can let the pushrod come off the rocker ball, not rare on engines that have been sitting a long time, or ones that just had new guides fitted badly. Check that the pushrod is not now bent. FRM |

You don't even have to loosen the rocker shaft bolts. Just slacken off the adjuster screw as far back as it goes, then rotate the engine until the tapet is full down, and you can push the rocker arm sideways across the pushrod. I just did that today to change a broken rocker arm. |
