MG MGA - Becoming a Parts Distributor?
Hi all, Sorry if I am a bit off topic but perhaps there is someone out there who can offer advice. There is a small but strong British car community here and the people are just as dedicated to preserving these cars as any enthusiast. As prices of an item from a shop can be up to 4 times the cost of purchasing directly, I get regular requests to help people order parts and supplies directly from the US and the UK. Just like home, there are a lot of people who maintain their own cars and don't like to rely on the shops for parts at ridiculously inflated prices. Athough some speak English very well, they aren't confident placing orders themselves. It's just easier and less stressful to pony up and pay. Even easier to drop me an e-mail or catch me at a rally. I think there is an opportunity to bridge this gap by possibly becomming a parts distributor as a side business. Besides, I like helping out anyway and I have a 4-year reputation built up. Are there any distributors out there with any advice or suggestions? |

Hi Tom, Where are you located in Japan - my wife is Japanese and folks are from Gumma. We get over there every couple of years - hopefully more when I retire in 18 months. Mike |

Tom, why don't you contact the guys at Moss. They are usually very interested in supporting resellers of their parts and should have a lot of information and refereences for you. I don't know if he's the right person, but I've had very good communications with Kelvin Dodd. doddk@mossmotors.com |

Try Ceclia Bruce at:<MGAparts@aol.com>. She owns Scarborough Faire, a major source for MGA parts. |

Hi Mike, I work in downtown Tokyo and live just outside. One of my good MGA buddies lives is Saitama, just south of Gumma. My wife does not understand why I like old 'boroboro' cars. Used/old = junk even though my car is in pretty darn good shape. Have you had this experience??? If you would like to know about rallies or cruises when you stop by for a visit just drop me a message. Got a spare seat in an MGA. It will be tight, though as I am 6'2! Bill, David, geat contacts. This is the second time Mr. Dodd has been given as a reference and I should contact SF as well to see what they have to offer. Thanks to all! Tom |

I recently set up Alaska Roadster as a Moss dealer here in Alaska to try to save a little money for my fellow MG, AH, and TR owners. I dealt with Giles Kenyon at Moss initially. Being a dealer isn't a perfect solution for the high cost of parts, but it helps a little. Shipping costs will still kill you, and my discount is typically only 15% to 20%. Ken |

Hi Ken, Can I consult with you directly to discuss? I would love tho think I'd get rich doing this, but it is more of a service. Heck, these guys take me to places I would never think of going. As for shipping, well, even if I order for them on my account we gotta pay so it should come as no surprise! Tom |

I dunno about saving money, but at least Ken has saved some of mine from leaving the state! Seriously though, it's been a big help not having to pay Moss' ridiculous handling charges on all the parts I have been buying for my restoration project. As an individual, Moss insists on charging me the rate for UPS air shipment even if I have them send it by a slower method, so having a local distributor is great. |

Tom, I'll be happy to share with you what I have learned. You can email me questions at ak.roadster@att.net Del, Have you been making progress on your sills since Christmas? I still owe you that t-shirt. Ken |

A little. Last weekend I finally got the last fragments of the old RH sill off the front inner fender where it overlaps the sill in front. Due to lack of space to work between the body and frame, I ended up getting the last of it out using blows on a sharpened scraper and a dremel tool. I'll drop you an email when I have something new worth looking at again. |
