MG MGA - Bent gear stick
A quick question folks:- I'm about to send my gear stick off for re-chroming but when perusing Clausager one night the few pictures of the gear stick shown there seem to indicate that it is perfectly straight whereas mine has a bend towards the driver(RHS). Has mine had a bang in it's life? I can't believe it has been bent otherwise the plating would be cracked? Cheers Mike |

Mike Just had a look at mine on the garage floor (currently using a 5-speed box). It's perfectly straight. Steve |

Hi Mike. My gear change lever is also dead straight. Cheers! Glenn |

Mine's straight, Everard's is slightly bent. Oh you are aweful !!! |

It seems most bent shifter are usually a different trans in the car such as a MGB. The shifter on a MGA should be straight. |

Thanks for your comments - I was thinking last night it might be an MGB gear lever* and was wondering also whether it's an MGB box I've got. Does anyone know the numbering system for the gearboxes? Clausager says they have a letter prefix followed by four digits. Mine is numbered M18507. The input shaft has 10 splines and the case has the high starter position so this stacks up with a Mk1. So perhaps the previous owner changed the stick for a less rusty one? Unless there was a change in the lever for the later cars? Glenn,Steve,Gert,Jeff: Are your cars all pre July 1960? If so is there anyone out there with a later car than mine with a bent lever? Thanks Mike * PS I'll ask on the MGB site |

If it's an early MGB box it could be either bent or straight dependant on whether it was overdrive or non overdrive. Four synchro cars had straight sticks. |
