MG MGA - Best UK supplier for fuel sender unit
My sender unit has gone wrong (inside coil shorted to case) who in the UK supplies the best replacement, MOSS appear to do an original and aftermarket, any suggestions. Thanks Dave |

Try Bob West (01977 703828). He will best advise you. Steve |

Thanks Steve, seems like Bob and co are on Easter break (no answer) will try after the holiday. |

Gents, I have spoken with Bob West he said it is not worth buying a repro unit as they can fail very quickly like mine did. Best chance is to find an original and get it refurbed. Up until then I will use a dip stick for my fuel level. Regards Dave |

Just for interest Moss UK say they do an original sender unit for £47 but they are made in USA? But they have had problems with a bad batch, stick with the pice of wood. |

Dave I found a brand new aftermarket one in a box of bits I purchased. I thought I was in luck until I tried to fit it into the tank. The casting was two big and even with some careful filing it wouldn't fit, Stay with you old one if possible. I seem to recall that the original type had a metal float and the pattern type have plastic floats Regards...JB |

That's right there's metal float on the original. The repro ones I've seen use too thick a wire coil with a low resistance and one wiper/pick-up. Gives useless readings and the gauge goes crazy with the gaps in the coil. The original has a wiper each side of a very fine wire coil with a resistance of 70 ohms. Be careful of the fine wire running from the top of the coil to the terminal. On a repro one I had, the terminal leaked petrol as a nylon nut used as a spacer and seal had split!!! and I had to file all the mounting holes to fit the tank. They supply a rubber gasket and use a similar rubber gasket on the removable plate. Both expand in contact with fuel. Had to make both from cork gasket material. I think them copying eastern gentlemen just can't crack this one can they. Pete |

I've also had disappointing results with the Moss sender unit. Plastic float developed a hole within weeks, and even with that replaced, the gauge is not giving me anything like an accurate reading any more. |

Richard IF your current sender is giving consistent readings then it is time to calibrate the gauge. See http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/electr_1.htm and scroll down to FG 101 and 102. HTH Larry |

Richard The gauge is the last thing you touch. Remember it was probably alright before the sender packed up. Check the unit gives a max reading of 70 ohms resistance and gives a smooth change as it reduces to zero. Trouble is you have to get the ***** thing out again! The original had two wipers one each side of a very fine coil, giving a nice smooth response. Pete |

Try Speedy Cables in South Wales, they will repair and /or calibrate your sender and gauge, they've just done my Twin Cam gauge. Excellent service, unlike some other's who I will not mention just yet. As Steve said Bob West is also a good choice for information and parts Terry |

Or if you want to DIY, there are pretty good instructions on how-to here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et214.htm |

My car has an original sender, the comments about it being smooth and all that do not apply to mine. It is probably the biggest pile of crap on the car. That said the one on my midget is better only because the gauge is dampened. |
Bob (robert) I am turning? yes I once owned an MGWasp!! |
