MG MGA - Block Drain Tap
Hi I seem to have a blockage at the block drain tap. I took off the tap and cleaned it, but behind the tap in the block was solid sludge. I clean it out but still seems blocked when I fire air in from my compressor. There must be a right angle bend as I feel the cleaning wire is now hitting solid metal when I push it straight in. Any ideas for unblocking? thanks Barry |

As you have found I couldn't unblock mine with a horizontal drill through the tap hole so I went in vertically from the top of the block with a long 1/4" (I think) drill down the closest water hole. It seems to be a collection point for all the rust scale inside the block. You have to be gentle with the drill of course!!............Mike |

Hi Mike Thanks for that tip, I'll go and try that now. Barry |

Hi Mike It worked. I used a long bladed screwdriver and twisted it a few times down the nearest hole et voila water pouring out of the drain tap hole. I am just off to empty the water out of my shoes now. thanks Barry |

Last time I had the engine apart I took the opportunity to remove the core plugs to check the water ways. One was fully choked with hardened sludge. Worth doing while you have the engine on your bench and the head off. Many owners wonder why their engines overheat. This is one contributory factor. Steve |
