MG MGA - brakes
I have just restored my MGA. brakes stay on after just a few pedal pumps. New master cylinder, new brake hoses, all lines clear and calipers rebuilt. If I open a bleeder on either caliper, front wheels are free. Can anyone give me an idea or two, please. |

Put a cardboard spacer in the front of the master cyliner. You can cut out for the push rods. There is a lot of information on the hole in the m/c not being fully opened to allow fluid to go back properly in the archives. Did you use Dot 3 or Dot 5 fluid? |

There can be a problem with the piston in the Master Cylinder not retracting enough to clear the fluid return port, but before investigating that ensure that the brake pushrod at the Master Cylinder is adjusted for the correct clearance, as per the Workshop Manual. Firstly, just check for ANY clearance. Mick |

I had the same problem. I tried Jeff's suggestion with no luck. After some investigating I found that both pushrods were too long (replaced prior to me buying the car and before becomming roadworthy) It was so bad on my car that on the maiden voyage, not only did the brakes lock up, but the slave cylinder piston popped out and got wedged. Lost all ability to operate the car. Ground down the pushrods, leaving enough for future adjustments, and have been fine for the last 1500 miles or so. Good luck. |

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR REPLIES. IT WAS THE MASTER CYLINDER PUSHROD THAT WAS INCORRECTLY ADJUSTED. PROBLEM NOW SOLVED. |
