MG MGA - breather pipe
Hi all, just noticed today that there is a small patch of oil , about the size of a small tin lid, appearing under the side breather pipe when the car is idling, I haven't seen it before any ideas would be welcome gordon |

Gordon Is it dropping from the breather pipe or possibly running down the side of the block from the tappet covers? Steve |

Its that fire breathing engine Gordon it will throw oil out. I reckon you ought to sell it. :-) |
Bob (robert) yes Y8 is toast again :) |
Gordon There was also quite a lot on crankcase venting discussed at the end of last year. I had mine set up all wrong and Barney eventually put me right. See here: http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&access=&mode=archiveth&subject=6&subjectar=6&thread=200612281420095446 The first post in the link makes reference to an early style vent pipe that created a lot of oil drips. Could this be yours? Clausager seems to indicate that the changeover took place in Jan 1958. Steve |

Hi Steve yes the pipe does point down and I think I have found the cause I had the original MGA oil filler cap with no vent and I remembered that the chap I bought it from said that he used the later vented plastic one when he used the car as it made it breath better, on fitting the plastic one it did seem to be a bit smoother on tick over and seems to have stopped dribbling, unlike it's owner, Bob you never give up lol Gordon |
