MG MGA - Byers MGA Special

Those of you interested in MGA specials-

I found this while I was searching MGA images on Google today. Scroll down a bit once you've got ahold of the page.

Looks kind of like a Devin to me. I'd love to look under the skin!

We've seen one picture of that car here before, I think it was from Steve Simmon's web page. How could it be any prettier. Steve

Theres a Devin Triumph a little farther up the page. Very sleek. The 2 are similar, headrest nacelle being the most obvious difference.

The Byers MGA was built about 12 to 15 years ago using a body shell that turned up at the Lime Rock VSCCA Fall Festival flea market in the B paddock. The body is a Byers CR90 shell, very similar in appearance to the Devin except that it is doorless. The 90 means that it was designed for a 90 inch wheelbase, the guy who built it (I think his name was Sherwood from Vermont) happened to have an MGA 1500 and with a lot of effort, managed to make the body fit the 94 inch MGA wheelbase with some cutting and reshaping of the wheel wells. I have some photos from its first racing season before the headrest, the fancy white striping and when it still had wire wheels and a large bulge on the bonnet to clear the 1500 engine. I was attracted to it immediately when I first saw it since I have a wrecked Devin Twin Cam. Susequent owners have done a lot of improvements to it. If I recall correctly, originally it had plywood bulkheads which have been replaced with alluminum, the engine has been moved back and lowered and there has been much massaging of the engine and suspension. There is also a Devin bodied TR4 that runs SVRA in the northeast that looks almost identical to the Byers, both are very slick looking machines.

Frank,

Is that a Devon based on an mga twin cam Chassis ?

Any Pictures ?

Frank - didn't know you had a Devin Twincam.

I guess going back to stock body is out of he question as it sounds fairly far along in terms of modification.

I've been eyeing my Twincam race motor

which is sitting in the garage waiting to go back in the MGA race car, and thinking how nice it would be in the Jamaican I just picked up

http://www.rhodo.citymax.com/i/non-rhodo/57Jamacian_1.jpg

but it would be a pig to drive in town and gas would be a bitch for 12:1

It would certainly be the best looking engine option, though!

Guess I'll go with GM....

There are also several pictures of the Byers MGA and Frank Graham's Devin body on my website with MGA-specials. Have a look at:

Scoll down a bit

So where does the "twin cam" come into it.

Does it have a standard MGA chassis and an MGA Twin Cam engine ?

Went back and looked at the Byers again. That is downright juicy! I really like the body on it, althugh it's too bad they had to have the bump in the nose to clear the engine.

The knock-on mags look right on it, although I've never been convinced of their strength for racing use (a buddy destroyed one with cornering force).

If I needed another race car, that would tempt me into popping my Twincam engine in the Jamaican, but if I did that, I could also put it back in the MGA race car and could have THAT back on the track.....decisions.
