MG MGA - Camshaft removal

Does the crankshaft have to come out before the cam ? Something is obstructing removal and I think it is crank web / cam lobe interference. It comes out about 1". I can't rotate the crank yet due to stuck pistons.

Have you removed the spindle with the gear that drives the distributor and oil pump? Also have you removed the tachometer drive spindle?
Have you removed all eight tappets (cam followers)?

For a three main bearing engine, remove distributor drive gear and tappets. The cam will come out without removing the oil pump (or oil pan). Just don't drop the dizzy drive gear in the sump.

Thanks for that. I have the dizzy out, but how does the driveshaft come out? If I tilt the engine will it fall out? Right now the engine is upside down and the spindle is in fact pointing downhill. If I move the camshaft out 1" the gear disengages but the spindle does not fall out. Is there a way of picking it up from the dizzy end? I don't want to force anything.

Art, From memory I think you screw a head stud into the centre of the distributor driveshaft/gear and just lift it out with a spiral motion.
Good luck. Barry

First must remove the cast iron distributor mounting collar from the engine block. Remove one flat head screw, then bump the flange to rotate it a bit to break it loose and pull it out. Then use a long 5/16-24-UNF threaded bolt (the smaller rocker pedestal stud works well). Screw that will into the dizzy drive gear to pull it out, after which the camshaft can be removed.

When you reassemble everything you need to align the cam drive sprockets and timing chain, then install teh dizzy drive gear in proper orientation. See here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/ignition/ig103.htm

Maybe it would be best to fit the 5/16-24 UNF stud before you remove the mounting collar to avoid dropping the gear.
