MG MGA - Canadian Question - Oil
Hi All, I asked this question earlier but am still having problems knowing what the correct product is to buy here in Canada. I have been to Canadian Tire and Parts Source but just got blank stares when I mentioned Hypoid 90. I did look at everything they had and don't remember seeing GL5 but maybe i just missed it. So, Calling all Canadian's, what product are you using for your steering rack and back axle? Also, where do you go to buy it? |

Roy, I went to the Castrol website for Canada and they identify the correct oil as: Castrol Hypoy C Gear Oil 80W-90 They have many retail sales outlets in Ontario, but they ask for more details on your location. Go to their website and type in Ontario for a search. http://www.castrol.com/castrol/loaddistributorLocatorAction.do?categoryId=8320024 Mick |

Hypoid C is right and should be readily available. I see no reason you couldn't also use a synthetic like Redline (unless you have a limited slip) I use these in my diff and gearbox in the old Lamborghini and they enhance shifting. |

Followup question. I have a regular grease gun with the spring push. Do I need a special one when filling the steering rack as this is an oil not a grease? |
R. Maher |
Roy - For information on converting a grease gun to a high pressure oiler, look at the article at: http://www.omgtr.ca/technical/highpressureoiler/highpressureoiler.htm Good luck - Dave |

Thank you all, very helpful. Roy. |

I went to the local gas service staion and asked for HYpoid 90wt rear axle fluid , and the guy said "How much do you want". Readily available locally. To fill your steering rack, go by an oil can with the pump type lever, Add a length of clear nylon hose to the tip and insert the hose underneath the rubber boot. Pump away until the desired quantity is inserted. replace the clamp and go do the rear end, using the same pump. |

Castrol Hypoid C is available at Canadian Tire and Wal Mart in Canada as well as most if not all Auto Parts Stores (Napa, CarQuest etc etc). |
