MG MGA - can't get it started
I have a 1959 mga. worked on a overheating prolem 2 weeks ago. removed the thermostat and took the car for a ride. temperature was just fine although acceleration was a bit sluggish. I have not been able to get the car started since this drive, Starter turns an engages but alot of bacfiring but the engine won't run. could I have burned out my coil. ICould it be a problem with the fuel pump. welcome any suggestions michael |

Michael. Please go to my website, www.custompistols.com/ and click on the MG section, then "articles". There are articles on how to trouble shoot the ignition and fuel systems on it which should provide some information. Also an article on how to check out the cooling system and the thermostat. It sounds like your ignition timing may be off. That can cause over heating, lack of power, and, if it slips sufficiently far off, lack of starting. You need to trouble shoot the problem in a logical manner, note your findings, then, let us know what you find. At that point, we can help. Les |

I'd start with replacing points and condensor. Typical signs of a failed condensor. Cheap to do as well. |

If you are getting a back fire you must be getting a spark so I doubt it is the coil. If you can hear the fuel pump clicking then it is working, it could just be poor flow and be low fuel level at the carbs but I would take Dominic's advice first and change the condenser. |
