MG MGA - Capillary tube route
Restoring 57 A and need to establish route of temp gauge capillary tube. On some cars i've seen the tube bends sharply from sender unit in the head and follows valve cover back to bulkhead: Others go across generator and back across inner guard. also need to know location through bulkhead. [many holes but all too small for bulb to pass ] The only one it will pass through is used by the oil line to gauge next to master cylinder [RHD car.]There is no heater fitted. Regards, Ron.

RJ My car, which I believed to be close to original when I acquired it, had the tube across the generator. It was attached to the inner wing by a couple of small P brackets. The tube was coiled a few turns between the sensor and attachment point to provide flexibility when the engine rocked. I need to check which hole in the firewall is used. Steve

There is a good layout of the firewall and the location of all the wires and cables that pass through on Barney Gaylord's web page. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/body/bd105.htm Looks like this is for a US spec car, some items reversed for UK and Aussie cars. This might help.

RJ Just looked in my engine bay. It appears to match Barney Gaylord's diagram, although it does not show up too well on my computer. My temperature probe goes the the extreme left hole at the bottom of the firewall as viewed from the front of the car. Steve

I've also just had a look in 'Original MGA' by Clausager. Page 80 shows the underside of a dashboard with the pipe going through the hole as described above. However, rather interestingly, page 98 shows the tube following the other route back to the bulkhead - along the side of the engine, passing just under the engine number plate. Steve

| My 1600 service parts list showes a "clip thermometer pipe" which mounts to the heater valve, or if you dont have a heater a "Retainer- clip" which mounts with the 2 bolts that would attach the valve to the head.In this case then the clip would mount on to the retainer. Then the tube runs alongside the head to the front, but I dont know if this is the same for the 1500 or 1622 engine.
