MG MGA - Car Radio Aerial/Antenna

Hi Everyone,

I don't want to spoil the lines of my car by drilling a hole and fitting a regular radio aerial.

Anyone have any suggestions for a discrete aerial that actually works ? It has been suggested to me that I could fit an aerial underneath the car screwed to the bottom of the floor - but not sure how this would survive when you take into consideration how low the car sits anyhow...

Any thoughts would be really welcome ..

Aleks,
Previous owner drilled a hole in the rear bumper, inside the right overrider - hole normally unseen - with the aerial vertical and flexing in the wind. Not necessarily my choice but I have seen no reason to change it as it works. Of course, I can hardly hear the radio, even with the coupe windows closed, except when static.

Hi Aleks
I bought a cheap aerial off ebay and mounted behind the dash. It seems to work ok with my ‘modern’ negative earth radio /cd player.

I know there are internal windscreen, stick on, antenna but have no experience of how successful they are. Degree of success might also be dependent on the quality of your radio.

Made a bracket off the seat base for mine on the elan- the areal just runs up the rear edge of the seatback on the tunnel side- I did this thinking I could extend (telescope) it out if the reception was poor but never had to, it just sits up there about 400mm long against the back of the seat Cheap as chips universal areal, works great

I installed it behind the dashboard attached to one of the supports. It is electric and very efficient, with low consumption and can be connected to the electricity of the car easily by the proximity of available connections.

I had visions of an electric aerial trying to extend itself behind the dash when you turn the radio on.

And I have a camel back connected so that I turn on the radio and the antenna brings my secret elixir of life to my mouth.

Use a blu tooth speaker driven by a smart phone. No antenna needed.

Jim, what's a blue tooth speaker and a smart phone ??LOL...we are still in the 60's don't forget!

I know Gary! Just hide it and no one will know.

Most of the time, my engine and exhaust are all of the music I need. But when I want some 60s music, iHeartRadio and this speaker are great. Heres the one I use. https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Ears-WONDERBOOM-Waterproof-Bluetooth/dp/B06XH3PWSF

Great sound!

Out of jokes and epistemological debates or philosophy of science, I attach photo of my electric antenna because it needs the electricity of the car but conventionally known as electronics. I have chosen to hide everything and this system works for FM, Bluetooth and mp3.

Hi Alex I have recently fitted a special FM aerial under the drivers side. It cost about £100 some years ago. It's a long 1m loop. It works ok in strong signal areas but is bad here in continental Europe and in parts of the UK. I would not recommend it. I'm also having trouble with a DAB aerial in the car. It works ok with the engine off but gets very distorted when the engine runs. I have put supressors on and an active filter but these do not improve things.

So I'd be interested in a good solution on aerials.

I can clearly hear my radio with Bluetooth music from my phone up to about 50mph so it's good for pootling along lanes and A roads. I fitted some 9x6 speakers up behind the dash in mdf boxes.
