MG MGA - Carb rebuilders

I have a set of su carbs from my 58 mga that need to be rebuilt. They also need new shafts. Does anyone know of a person/garage that does this in Illinois? I live in Central Illinois. Also, would like for them to be resonably priced.. Like less than $300.00 that includes shipping. thanks

Mike,

There is a guy I used in Wisconsin to do my carbs, they came out great and his price was very reasonable.
He will probably be at the Chicagoland MG swqp meet this Sunday. If you cannot make it I will look for his information in my records.

Mike. I would second Joe Curto for anything SU related. I would also add John Twist (University Motors, Ltd). Joe is in New York and John in Michigan, but, their quality of service and reputations are second to none.

If you don't find anyone closer, I suggest you contact Jim McGraw at http://www.basicbritish.com/ Jim has done a lot of SUs for midgets and should be able to help you at a reasonable price.

Thanks guys!!! Joe's is so busy that his turn around time is unpredictable. He did my m/c.. I do plan to go to the Chicagoland swap if the weather holds up. Its predicted that we'll get a mixture of rain and sleet, knowing this I'm sure every road north of I80 will be a sheet of ice. I have meet the guy from wisconsin but don't have his e-mail or address. John Twist has good reputation also. thanks again...

Mike,

Why not try rebuilding them yourself? Not to tough if all the parts are there. Most carbs will work fine by just replacing the throttle shafts. If the bodies are slightly worn, oversize shafts are available. So long as you don't have to rebush the bodies, the rest is pretty simple. The toughest part is drilling for the tapered pins on the throttle shafts. Most of the work is remove- clean- reassemble and adjust. The total cost of parts including throttle shafts is around $60 - $70. Plus you get a bunch of "I did it myself" credits.

I plan on attending the swap meet regardless of the weather as it is less than 10 miles from here. Let me know if you want to meet.

I agree with Chuck. SU's are pretty simple to rebuild and kits are reasonable. Even if the body to shaft fit is not the greatest, according to an old time British mechanic that gave a tech session at the Oregon GT a few years ago, they did not worry about shaft clearance as it really only affected idle. Above idle any air that slips by the shaft to body fit just does not have much affect on performance. Fit the new shaft in the kit and don't worry about it. Have a good day!

ahhhhhh, got me thinking? I do have rebuilding kits. So, maybe I'll just have the shafts refurbished. Chuck if you would be so kind as to get the name and address from the Wisconsin carb Man at the swap meet and post here I'll be forever grateful. From the looks of things the sleet that we have gotten I'll not make it. Thanks again
Mike

Mike, I'll try to get the name you are looking for.

But even having the shafts rebushed may be unnecessary. In the 2 sets of carbs that I have rebuilt, they needed little more that cleaning, new gaskets and new shafts. Generally, the shafts wear MUCH faster than the bodies and rebushing the bodies was not needed.

Mike, Got back from the swap meet. I met a guy who may be the one you are looking for. He rebuilds the MGA carbs at ~$140 for the pair. This includes new shafts and blasting the carb bodies. It also includes the o-rings to replace the cork seals on the jet body. As it turns out, I know 2 people who have used him and are very pleased with the work.

However, I asked him if he rebushes the bodies. He said he has never had the need to do so. Either std or oversized shafts are all he has ever needed. Soooo...... Other than the o-ring seals, he does what you can do yourself.

He is out of Wisconsin so he may be the one you are referring to. His name is Dick Luening and can be contacted at 414 529-3200. If you need polished show carbs, he can point you to someone who can do that for you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.. Yes, he is the one. I had several business cards from other people in Wisconsin but, Dick's name struck a bell.. Thanks again
Mike

I sent mine to Joe Curto to have the shafts rebushed. I also bought the rebuild kit from him. The total cost was around what the rebuild kit was from Moss. And he answered my questions. I would highly recommend him
