MG MGA - Carb spindle /coupling / throttle cable question
For some while I've been running rich despite lots of tweaking of the carbs etc. I've also recently found out that turning the idle screws to close the butterflies doesn't close them fully enough to stall the engine. My question is whether it matters where the accelerator cable bracket is fixed to the shaft connecting the the carbs. On my carbs the bracket is between the coupling clamps (on the centre coupling shaft) whereas it seems to be on the rear carb spindle shaft on virtually all the H4 photos I've been able to find on the internet. Could the location of the accelerator cable bracket on the coupling rod be causing my issues with the butterflies not closing fully? Photo attached for reference. Its been like this since I bought the car 7 years ago. Thanks. Tim |

Hi Tim Can’t compare to mine at moment as we are in Wales and won’t be home until Friday. Can comment then or have a get together. Mine is running boringly well at the moment! Paul |

Tim, The two issues you mentioned are not necessarily connected. Your throttle arrangement is the same as mine. The obvious question is whether there is any movement on the spindle or is the disc worn ? |

There are shaft tensioner springs at both ends of the joined shaft. I adjust them to ensure firm and maximum closure when the cable is attached. Steve |

Thanks for these comments. I'm inclined to shift the cable bracket just to see if it makes any difference. I'm keen not to remove the carbs from the car until the winter months to check the plates properly or to try and adjust the torsion springs. Is be interested Paul to see a photo of your carb set up. |
