MG MGA - Carb tuning
I have just had to have my car into an auto electrician to find a recurring cutting out problem witch thankfully he found and fixed, while doing this he also tweaked the mixture set up of the carbs which has actually improved the running of the engine, Having done that he has told me that I would find a marked improvement if I were to have the needles married to the carburettors(although he did use a different term which for the moment escapes me) which is carried out by machining the taper on each which is a job that can be carried out by a local specialist, to me this sounds reasonable but is it, and if it is, what is to be gained for a road car, faster acceleration, improved mpg, or is he indeed blowing up my exhaust?,I would be interested in any oppinions, Thank you, Vin |

Vin, It is not normal to machine the taper on the needles for a road car. Only a very skilled tuner can do that and it is unlikely he could improve on the factory choice of taper. If the needles and/or the jets are worn they should be replaced and the normal procedure followed for tuning SU's. Mick |
