MG MGA - Castor Angle
In the latest MG Enthusiast there is an interesting article that explains all you need to know castor angles and how to reduce the angle on MGBs. My question: Is the standard MGA castor angle the optimum? If not, can it be altered? Steve |

Hi Steve The quick answere is no, the suspension mounts are bolted directly onto the chassis unlike a 'B' which has a cross member bolted to the body shell. I have pondered this but haven't come up with a solution. An 'A' would be drasticly improved if you could, Hoyle engineering make a replacement front suspension kit which alters camber and track but not castor. Has anyone done this succesfully and safely ? Regards Terry |

Unfortunately it would be a lot of design work to pull this off. To change the caster both bottom A arm mounts and Top shock mounts would need to be relocated and shimed. Due to the king pin type design both mounting points need to be in the same plane to prevent binding and side stresses. I think this is one of the reasons everyone went to ball joints as mis-alignment top to bottom is not an issue with ball joints. |

http://www.hoyle-engineering.co.uk/index.html interesting, but expensive at £675 + VAT Steve, Is that the June issue ? I'd like adjustable suspension on the front, but need it to look standard to comply with the rules Cheers <MARK> |

Mark Yes, it's the June edition, page 46 and 47. I can scan it and email if anyone is interested. Quite well written. I even understood the logic! Anyone in the UK who belongs to the MGCC gets a free copy of MG Enthusiast each month - cover price normally £3.75 a month. Steve |

Yes please Steve, Just moved to geneva, so the mgcc may still send mine to my old address |

Mark I've emailed you the document. You will be able to link up with Dominic out there and test his supercharger! Steve |

Thanks Steve, Have you seen this article also http://www.v8register.net/subpages/RV8NOTE232.htm Cheers <MARK> |

I don't know why anyone would want to change the castor angle on the MGA, but where there's a will there's a way. Use your best creative method to modify the shock arms to create a fore/aft offset for the top swivel, then shim the lower arm and shock mounts to match the new castor angle. |
