MG MGA - Chassis measurement-tube cross member
The round cross member under the gearbox on my '58 coupe chassis is dented on its underside, (like every one I have seen). However, before I removed the engine and gearbox, I noticed the top of the tube on the right side was very close to the clutch slave cylinder, and almost touching it. I suspect the tube has been so badly hit that it is high on the right side of the frame. The floorboard/tunnel support frame is kinked near the tube also. The Chassis Dimensional Drawing in the workshop manual (and same is shown on Barney's site) does not give any measurements for this tube. Does anyone happen to know how low the bottom of the tube should be below the engine cross member, or relative to the side frame? (of course the tube is very dented on its bottom side, but a dimension would give me a guide to assist with lowering the right side). Perhaps Karl Heidemann of Eclectic has a record of this? All information appreciated. Peter. |

2 pictures and a note to your e mail. The space between on my 58 coupe is 3/16". |

Thanks for the photos. It's been almost a week, and no one has this measurement it seems. Peter. |

Peter, I have emailed you some pics which might help. |

The bottom of the round cross member is 2 to 2 1/4 inches below the bottom face of the side frame, depending whether measuring LH or RH side. The measurement was taken with a straight edge placed on the relatively undamaged lower surface of the round crossmember on my car. Garry |

Many thanks Garry for your efforts, and Art for the photos. The pics and the measurement will be a great help. I will just have to allow for the tube being flattened along the bottom! Peter. |
