MG MGA - choke cable

Is it possible to fit a new choke cable on to the original bakalite knob, or must you use a new knob and cable?
Nigel Munford

Nigel,

you can get a used Morris Minor one, they appear regularly on eBay. It's a nice job restoring as they come up like new.

Nigel,
I replaced the cable on mine about 5 years ago. I don't remember too many details. The knob is molded around a chrome plated brass shaft. The other end of the brass shaft is hollow and I just removed the old inner cable and soldered in a new one. I seem to remember the biggest problem was getting the knob and inner cable out of the metal housing that attaches to the dash. I think there was a clip or sleeve or somthing around the rear of the metal housing that needed to be removed before the knob with brass shaft and inner cable would pull out of the housing.

I did the same as Jeff. And like Jeff, I also forgot most of the details. All I can say is that it can be done with a little effort. I replaced the inner cable and used heatshrink tubing over the outer sleeve to keep the elements out. If I remember correctly, I used a bicycle brake cable for the inner cable.

There is nothing worse (OK, there really are things worse) than having all knobs with just the right patina and one knob bright and shiney and black.

Don't forget to put a bit of a twist to the inner cable when attaching it to the engine. This will bias the choke knob and the various "stops" will work properly.
