MG MGA - Chrome twin cam rims

I am thinking of chroming the rims on my twin cam MGA. Has anyone done this? Any tips?

How about powdercoating???

This subject should ignite some of the purists.

I have to say that though I'm not a true purist, I do think that some may view such an undertaking a bit, dare I say - gaudy?

The car is rare, the wheels alone are worth a ton of money as seen on ebay recently.

BTW, Is your TC the red one that came from the east coast with a pushrod engine in it? Just curious.

Two words....

Hydrogen Embrittlement.

I don't know much about it except if not done properly, a stressed steel part (wheel)can be significantly weakened by chrome plating. Do some research before you leap forward.

Sorry this is off-topic, but I hate to push a good thread off the chart for a couple simple questions:

What is the distance center-to-center between the two twin cam carbs? What distance of throttle shaft extends inboard for the coupling-clamps to grab onto?

Thanks to anyone who would check that for me,

A friend of mine did this to his rimes, but I don't like the effect.

The detail of the rim is lost in a blinding flash of chrome. Just doesn't look right.

Save the reverse chromies for your Baja Bug.

Amazing how the World goes around. I got into this Hydrogen embrittlement problem when looking at chrome plating my mga twin cam wheels in 1964. Luckily we were aware of the problem and took precautions against it.
However, they looked terrible. Eventually I painted over them with the standard color paint.
An article on the Hydrogen problem in electroplating is at:
