MG MGA - Clarke Spares Door Seals

I have been running sans door seals for years. When it's dry all is well but when it rains I get some some leakage from up under the door and onto the carpet.

I read Barney's post about installing the Clarke Spares door seals. Now also being a frugal (read: poor) MGA enthusiast, I am wondering if the price can be justified.

I have no doubt about the quality of Todd's parts and I do not disagree with his pricing. Although they are expensive, I'm sure they have many hours in design and engineering in them.

Anyone out there have an opinion?
Tommy

Tommy I agree with you,I'm using another supplier's seals, would like to change to Todd's, but mine are fine for now since we have our son in college at this time,so that, new grey carpet,5speed,HRG head, etc are on the back burner. That said I met Todd at an MG show years ago and was quite impressed with him and his products and have used many of them.

Tommy, during my rebuild, I had bought the available door seals that everybody has ahd trouble with. Partly due to the lack of knowledge at the time. But, being a miser at heart, I kept the seals until I had the car put back together. Then it was too late. The door did not close very well, if at all. I did, however, find a way to make it work. I slit the ribber bulb so it acted more as a flap. The slit was at the bottom return so it is out of sight. The A pillar seal was slit on the leading edge and the B pillar seal was slit on the trailing edge. In other words, the flap is attached at the inner "visible" edge and cut at the outer return. The door seals well and no leaks. It works so well for me, I have not had the need to seek out better seals by McGreggor or Clark Spares. I can really recommend this method for those who need something but cannot justify the higher cost.

P.S. how did the Kameleon work out for you?

I have the Clarke seals. They work great. I adjusted the door without them first. When I put them on and closed the door, it closes easy and seals up nice. They cost more but you get what you pay for. You can buy the cheap ones first, then after you find out they don't work well, you then have to put out more money for the better ones. He also has some color choices.

Chuck, funny you should ask about the stereo. It is installed, speakers mounted under the dash (interesting) and it works. However, I must be doing something wrong. I have tried Cruise modes I and II, but the volume does not change automatically. I don't have a troubleshooting guide so I have been changing the volume manually. Any suggestions? Good idea on the seals, but I may buy the 'budget' seals, have trouble fitting them, then have to buy the good ones out of frustration!

Yes, Jeff. Penny wise pound foolish. Same goes for tools. Just shell out the bucks. You get what you pay for.

When I painted my car I bought a mid-level Devilbiss and it worked very well. Tried to help a friend paint a car with a cheapo-at his request-and it was a disaster. Drove a couple hours to pick up the Devilbiss and things turned out well.

I could blame my inexperience or the gun. The car turned out great with my gun so I blame the cheapo one.

OK, if I had more experince maybe I could have made the cheapo gun work.

I have the Clarke door seals. They went on easy (no problems with fit or function)and look great! Just like everything he sells: top quality, original look.

Tom,

I went to my local auto body trim specialists and found a seal that is nearly ientical. the rubber bit that door closes against is a little stiffer, so I cut it along it's length to allow for it to crush easier. Cost? I recall about $3 per foot.

Tommy and Chuck,

What's up with the kameleon? I can't find a reference on the internet for a kameleon radio.

Also Tommy do you have any pics you can share of the speakers under the dash?

Thanks,

Tysen

The stereo is a JVC El Kameleon. Check their website or Ebay. I don't have any pics yet but will try to get some this weekend.
Tommy

Sorry for stealing this topic. I have created a new one for discussing the El Kameleon and installations.
