MG MGA - CLassic Car Rally, Japan

What a great weekend. Sixty percent chance of rain, cold temperatures, and heavy wind. It decided to wait until Monday and we had 70 degrees, clear skies, and a view of Mt. Fuji and Jupiter.

As we stopped for a break from our spring tour, we came across a large vintage car rally consisting of pre-war open wheel racers, and a host of odd European cars from the 30's to the 60's. Oh, and there was one Laborghini Miura.

Out of all the cars, we saw but 2 MGAs. One Coupe and one roadster-both very nice. It was nice to see that these modest cars were able to compete with the XKs, the E-Types, Speedsters, Daytonas, Cobras, Abarths, Healeys, etc. at least in spirit. We sat for over an hour, with Mt. Fuji as our backdrop and a host of cars racing up the mountain side. What a day.

As a topper to an already great weekend, we were escorted to an 'abandoned' garage. There we found a US model Honda S600, an amazingly original MK IV midget, and a MK II MGA Roadster just begging to be driven. It was one of those unrestored originals that you would never dare to restore for fear of losing the character. Of course it was not for sale.

It is estimated that there are roughly 20 to 30 MGAs in Japan. We had 5 of them in a secluded spot deep in the countryside. Again, what a day.
