MG MGA - clutch slave cyl bolts
Time to replace the slave cyl and found out the bolts that hold it to the bell housing are to large for the holes in the bell housing. Looked a my clutch cylinder and must ask....the cyl mounting holes,on the clutch cyl, are much larger than the bolt diameter. Is the bolt used a "stepped bolt" or is there a bushing that fits inside the clutch cyl to take up the differnce in size? |

Hi Gordon, The bolts that hold the slave cylinder to the bell housing are just common bolts and are not stepped. It sounds like your slave cylinder mounting holes have been drilled oversize. If the slave cylinder is new, you could return it to the vendor, or find or fabricate a pair of sleeves to size the holes down to fit the mounting bolts. Cheers! Glenn |

Glenn, it is the origional one that I hade re-sleeved with SS. I am the second owner and the PO never did his own work on the car. As far as I can fiqure there would be no reasons to enlarge these cyl holes.I can easily make the bushing (if necessary) but all of the pics on Ebay seem to show the same size holes as mine. Would you know the measurements of these bolts. The ones I got from the parts supplier were to large a diameter for the bell housing holes. |

Hi Gordon. My MGA is now in storage, (out of town this year) and I am unable to access it. I measured the mounting holes on a spare slave cylinder, and it appears that the bolts needed would be approximately 3/8 inch diameter. I have no idea if the bolt threads are fine or coarse. Hope this helps. GLenn |

Glenn and Dominic are correct the bolt is 3/8 coarse thread. The holes in a slave cyl in my hands measure .435 in. a 3/8 bolt is just under .375 so the fit is a little loose. Are the holes in your trans smaller? Or just the .060 clearance I note. Randy |

Well I guess that solves it. My supplier gave me two 1/2 inch fine thread x 21/2 inch long bolts for the mounting. As for the clutch cyl itself I will use a bushing or brass shimm to take up any slack between the mounting holes and the bolts. Thanks again. A couple more small things to do and my Coupe will hit the highway this spring after 33years off the road. |
