MG MGA - Coil

Firstly,happy new year to all.
Just finishing off a few jobs before fitting the body and trying to startup. However I have not fitted the wire between the coil and dizzy. What gauge does this have to be,and what amperage?
Best wishes,
Steve A.

hi Steve just had a look at ours and it is only light weight/ cant help on the amperage , check out Barney the Guru he is sure to be right , we are near to Sidmouth , how about you ? good luck .

If the coil were 3 ohms then ohms law would suggest that V = I x R

Or 12V divided by 3ohms equals 4amps :)

From memory I think the coil resistance of a non ballasted coil is around 3 to 3.5 ohms so 4 amps will be OK. No need for heavy gauge wire just select the same gauge as that in the distributor.

Only 4 amps nominal, but it sees more current at higher voltage for a few milliseconds at a time when the points open. 18 gauge is fine, and is the smallest wire you should use for any automotive application.

sorry should have said, in the UK we would use .75sqmm for that kind of current. 1sqmm would be more than ample if that is what you have.
