MG MGA - Colyn and his MGA Heater mod.

Colyn..interesting and well detailed story on your heater fan mod in Safety Fast magazine.
Just for interest, is that a filter on the end of the blue pipe?..in the engine bay pic.
Gary Lock

Glad you liked it Gary,
I did the heater upgrade over the winter, but with hindsight, I wish I had left it until the spring to give me something to do during lockdown.

I was really surprised just how much more airflow came out of the heater when I had finished it. With the demist flap closed, you can really feel the air blowing into your face.

I was also surprised to find that the heater motor also ran quite a lot faster when I fitted a thicker gauge wire via a relay for its power supply.
This suggests that the MGAs original wire/switch circuit may be be a little bit restrictive.

I did make one embarrassing error in the write-up, for some reason I gave credit to the wrong person when at the end of it.
It was actually my friend ROGER MARTIN, (co-writer of "Call it MGA" with Piers Hubbard) who gave me the idea to do this mod.

So apologies to him and my other friend Roger Webb who both must think that I am "losing it"!

Cheers

PS. The blue pipe connects to a Pipercross crankcase filter on the heater shelf.
My 1950cc engine runs a Weber DCOE which is so close to the inner wing that there is no space for an air filter, so there is nowhere to connect the crankcase ventilation inlet pipe on the valve cover to.
The plan was to run with this as a temporary setup until I came up with something neater, 3 1/2 years later I still haven't come up with anything!😀.
Suggestions anyone?

Colyn,

You say that you do not have the space for air filters with your Weber carburettors.
Have you tried something similar to this set up on a Twin Cam MGA?

Mick

M F Anderson

Thanks Mick,
all these years as a TwinCam fan and I didn't realise that those 90 degree curved inlet stacks were available.
I always assumed that TwinCams with Weber DCOEs either ran without filters, or had modified inner wing panels to allow space for them.
I will look into who can supply them.
Cheers
Colyn
