MG MGA - Competition de-luxe Seats
Are the seat frames used to create the competition de-luxe seats the same as the standard frames used for the roadster and coupe seats? Clausager says the seat cushion does'nt lift out the way the standard seats do so maybe its a different frame. Does anyone have these in their MGA - are they more comfortable? Thanks for your help, Randy Myers |

Randy, The frames are different. Standard frames could take both Coupe as well as roadster cushions/backrests. De-Luxe frames can only take De-Luxe cushions/backrests. The De-Luxe frames are similar to the MGB frames and people have often used these to recreate a De-Luxe set up as they are very difficult to find, but not totally original but to the untrained eye not noticeable. They are also a bit more supportive than the standard seats but if you're tall, they are higher than the standard seats and taller people struggle a bit because of the nature of the different frame and thicker padding. |

Randy, Also, the backrest frame is different between coupe and roadster; the roadster frame slopes down from the centre (to match the rear cockpit) whereas the coupe frame top is flat. Neil |

Early MGB seat frames can be narrowed 1-inch in the center to make MGA Competition-Deluxe seat frames. |

I'm almost temped to let my local car trim man have a go at making a pair of seats but what would really make the job achievable would be templates for the leather sections that someone has taken apart. That would be worth a few bob! |

Gentlemen, Thanks for your replies. Peter & Barney - I have a pair of seats from a '75 MGB, could they be modified? On the other hand, can an MGA seat frame be widened by an inch and achieve the same thing? Neil - I have both a roadster and a coupe. I was surprised that they bothered to change the back frame for the coupe. It just doesn't seem necessary. JH - Let me know if anything comes up on that front, I may need that info. in the near future. Thanks, Randy Myers |

The Deluxe seats are horrible if you are normal size or larger. There is little enough room with normal seats without making things worse. I think that the only thing that could drive an MGA with Deluxe seats and original (large) steering wheel comfortably would be a chimpanzee..... |

Randy, See attached pic of a bare de-luxe frame and compare it to both a standard MGA as well as the '75 MGB frame to see the differences. Floorboard holes are also in a different position to that of the standard frames. We haven't mentioned the straps and sprung holding clips yet which are all unique to the de-luxe frame as well..... |

My friend has competition seats for his TC. The only ones I've ever looked at. I was amazed at how different they are. The seat cushion webbing is unique in my experience. Cheers, GTF |

Hi Randy, Do you know when I can get a couple of extra clips from? Cheers Mark. |

My thanks to everyone who responded. Peter-the pic was very helpful. The back seems the same but the base is unique in my experience. GT-I'm interested that nonone said anything about comfort level, did you get a chance to sit on the comp deluxe seats? Mark-Though I have to admit to not being sure which clips you need, it sounds like something Todd Clarke might have. Best of luck to all, Randy Myers |

Renewing old and kn*ckered seat foams already makes a huge improvement in comfort. If the deluxe seats are deeper, I too would have a problem driving the car comfortably, and I'm not that tall - 1.74m. |

Randy, I did not sit in the seats. They are not installed in the car. I too am curious about their comfort level. Cheers, GTF |
