MG MGA - Complete Twin H4 outfit needs an engine

Running on SU-HIFs - the H4s heading for the loft for a future purist - unless someone's 1500/1600 is without. Complete manifold heatshield spacers refurbed carbs with renewed linkage and new OE line to Dizzi - everything except air filters. Needs a registered owner.

Roger,
are the HIFs any better than the H4s?
I just wondered why you fitted the HIFs when you already had the H4s?

Colyn, Good question. The original H4s were troublesome when we picked the car up in Sweden. We had a ferry to catch and no time to fiddle - got her home as the clutch/brake reservoir ran dry (no clutch or brakes). The Previous owner focused on the bodywork - I suspect the mechanicals were a mystery. A lot of work was needed including a new 1622 Burgess lead-free big valve head - that went on with the spare HIF set which I had for the 1800B.The HIF is very marginally more efficient than the H4 but both work well provided they are looked after
In slower time, I refitted the H4s and linkage - wondered whether they would be better on the A - originality et al. but the car is negative earth with an alternator - electronic ignition, Hella headlamps with 1600 sidelights, disc brakes and with a 1588 motor - and a lot better for it. Why should I worry about originality !
Long answer but someone will get a good original carby set.
Hope you have a good Christmas

I'm in much the same camp as you regarding originality Roger, there are almost to many mods on my car for me to remember them all, but it a great car to drive.

But all of the modifications I have done to the car could be easily undone using just a set of hand tools and some time.
And I have stored all the original parts in the garage to pass on to the NDO with the car, if he or she decides that they doesn't like what this PDO has done to the car. :^)

But back to the H4s, I would be inclined to keep them in storage Roger, if Moss could supply a new set, they would charge you around £1300 + VAT. (The are listed as NCA at present). HIFs are also NCA but there is not a price listed.
HS4s are available but they are £840 + VAT a pair.

So your H4s may actually be an investment!

Cheers

Colyn Firth

Colyn,
Good advice - they belong with the car - will have to find a spot for them in the loft !

Not carburettor related but when I had a front end incident a few years ago the fact I had had a bonnet lid hanging on several garage walls over 44 years saved over a £1000. (I broke my original rust bucket A in 1972.) And of course it was an original not an almost certainly flawed replica. Be very careful what you throw away.
