MG MGA - Crank Scrapers
Has any one fitted a crank scraper? At the moment I'm re building a 1622 motor and wondering if it would be worth the effort to fit one or even make one it looks straight forward Ian Mc 1956 Roadster |

Ian Check both the A and B archives. I believe that there was an extensive thread on this topic some time ago. HTH Larry |

I would expect a few percent increase in power; but have only seen crank scrapers once or twice in over 40 years of owning A & B series engined MGs. They are used by the Jaguar community in the XK striagt 6 engines:- http://www.rob-beere-racing.co.uk/engine.html |

OK, I have read the archives, and, at great risk of sounding like a complete mechanical idiot, I do not comprehend how wiping the oil from the crank and keeping the oil mist at bay can significantly add to the engine horsepower. Can somebody 'splain it to me? |

Frank, you are not an idiot. Crank scrapers do indeed have a function in racing and if you were running 8000 rpm at the drags, it would offer a small but significant benefit. For driving on the street, the main benefit is to the wallet of the vendors. Another one of those accessories that sounds nice in theory but isn't worth wasting time and money on. Sort of like dual point distributors, fancy crossdrilled brake rotors, Mosses new brainstorm, float bowl spacers.....no real benefit in performance to 99% of MG drivers. |
