MG MGA - Crankshafts
i was just trying to sort out the 2 remaining Mga cranks that I have, and I think I have 1 x 1600 and 1 x 1622. Maybe someone would just describe the differences please, to confirm. Can i use a 1600 crank in a 1622 block? I pretty much think I cannot, but have no main bearings yet so cannot try. Thanks guys Colin |

No, the cranks are not interchangeable between 1600 and 1622 - Motobuild once sent me a 1622 crank instead of a 1600 and I was really pi33ed off when I came to reassemble and found that the new crank was totally not going to fit my block. 1500/1600 cranks are AFAIK interchangeable. |

Thanks Dominic that was what I thought just wanted someone cleaverer than me to confirm it😀 So I have a 1600 (fits 1500) crank to sell. .020 main, .030 ends. Colin |

I believe that Dominic is correct: the 1500/1600 crankshafts are the same. I found a NOS one a few years ago and fitted it to my 1500 bored out to 1600 (1588). Nice to have 00 pistons and 00 main bearings in a 61 year old car. Shane |

Shane actually the 1500 and 1600 are the same but different! Same sizes but different shape on the webs. The 1622 looks the same as the 1600 but has wider webs for strength. Colin |

MGAGURU advises what the differences are in this article. 1500/1600 blocks need centre main bearing width reduced to fit a 1622 crankshaft. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/engine/cs110.htm Mike |

Just to try and confuse people. A large number of 1622 engines were made in Australia with the same capacity as the UK 1622 engines but with a 1600 type crankshaft with the engine block to suit. Just to complicate matters the casting on the side of the block reads 1620. Suitably confused? Mick |
